The Cars: Deep Cuts

The Cars: Deep Cuts

One of the secrets to The Cars' infectious fusion of power pop and New Wave is their use of electronics. On 1979's “Shoo Be Doo,” synths and vocoder swirl together like a kind of proto-techno; “Night Spots” folds bleepy arpeggios into strutting rock ‘n' roll. The intro of 1984's “It's Not the Night” could be mistaken for the work of a Miami electro-funk artist—at least, until the guitars kick in.
