The Standard. The Bar. The Superlative.

What other podcasts shoot for. And so on. I didn't always feel that way, though, and that '180' I did for the entire podcast is because I did a reversal on the one and only Luke "Lukems" Smith. Folks (especially those of you old enough to feel the need to lie about you age in a DOWNWARD direction), many of you will listen to this podcast and probably want to stop as soon as one of Luke's 'takes' or 'rants' starts. Trust me...DON'T. If you don't 'get' his brilliance or the podcast after two weeks' episodes...give it another two weeks. Repeat until you are illuminated and you eagerly and geekily look forward to this thing being posted on iTunes every Friday (actually Saturday). When certain news networks erroneously call themselves 'fair and balanced', it is a slap in the face to a podcast like this that actually has more 'balance' than the "Soul Calibur" series. These guys (the whole crew is distinctive in voice, personality, and position) not only know what's up, they will TELL YOU what's up, and potentially offended publishers and console manufacturers are not a 'fear factor' for them. I'm dead serious when I say that this is a joy and it is to the iPod what "Geometry Wars" is to the 360. That is to say, owning it almost alone justifies owning the hardware it's played on. Yes, it's THAT good--err, great--err, incredible. Other gaming podcasts, get in line behind this one. You've been "1upped".

If you like video games, listen to this podcast

An excellent group of guys who cut through the crap and give you exactly what they think. I look forward to it every week. Also, it's one of the funniest podcast's I've heard without being stupid. A lot of times you'll find yourself thinking of a question only to have one of the various Fantastic Four voice the same question. These guys are gamers through and through, but they also have families and other things that limit their videogame playing; just like the rest of us. I also like the various age differences between them; Garnet being like old, John being married, Shane getting to the age where he should be married by now, and Luke just getting out of his college drinking days. It provides a great dynamic to the show. Plus John's English, so you also get international credit. So cool.

Solid News, Reviews, and Industry Coverage

As far as the fine staff at 1UP has unique access to companies and personalities in the game industry, you are able to get some fresh content here that isn't just a rehash of material you've already seen on other games related media. But I find the best reason to check out the podcast and the video is that it is really nice to put a voice and a face to the writers and editors of ZD's publications. The reason my rating is 4 stars and not 5 is that I would like to see more of an editorial reason for the 'casts to exist, other than to just establish 1UP's claim to the podcasting world. Let's see some more exclusive interviews or first-person commentary, instead of just news and previews! I'd like to get to know the people behind the words just a little more!
