Best Sailing Podcast on iTunes and here’s why...

I love listening to sailing podcasts. I can’t imagine that iTunes offers a sailing podcast that I have not listened to at least once. 59º North with Andy (and Mia) Schell is the single best of them all. (I also love This Old Boat Newsletter podcast.) Andy does an incredible job of recruiting for interview an amazing diversity of authoritative sailing personalities who have substantive experiences and relevant material to share on almost any sailing topic you can imagine. Andy is smart and experienced enough to know the pertinent questions to ask each of his guests. And (I smile as I say this) he is getting experienced enough with his journalistic voice that he is even learning to resist answering his own questions before allowing his guest the opportunity to reply to them. (The ability to ask a focused and meaningful question of one’s guest, then get out of the way and let them answer it, is a rare quality among hosts. Andy is learning to do that) I have listened to every one of Andy’s podcasts, and I continue to go back to listen to many of them repeatedly. Some of his best are actually recordings of his own presentations, i.e. ‘Mentally Preparing to Go Offshore’ and ‘Solving Problems Offshore’, though I’ve really enjoyed his interviews with the Pardeys, John Harries, and Russ and Laurie of S/V Nexus. I also appreciate Andy’s sincere and usually successful effort to produce his podcasts on a weekly basis and I notice on the rare occasions when he’s late getting them posted. Thanks Andy, and Keep up the great work!

Not sure how he (Andy) does it...

I've not been sailing for more than 6-7 years and the more rallies I attend and sailors I meet the more I realize the sailing community is smaller than I thought. But, Andy has an incredible way of getting interviews with some of the biggest names in sailing and have a conversation with them like they've known each other for years. I've sailed with Andy on passage and can tell you that he is mature beyond his years and more knowledgeable than I expected about sailing in almost every aspect including: celestial navigation, boat configuration, sail configuration and much more! Given the chance, I would sail again with Andy in a heartbeat, but until then I'll listen to every podcast of Andy's that I possible can. I always seem to learn something from him or his guest. K. Great stuff, more to come!

Okay, I'll admit it, it's Andy here. I'm only writing this review to encourage anyone that listens to the podcast to review it here. It's been a blast to put this together, and I hope you enjoy listening to it! Help with it's success by sharing your thoughts here! Sneak preview: upcoming episodes include Matt Rutherford's account of his dramatic attempt to salvage an abandoned Swan 48; Lin & Larry Pardey from New Zealand; Cruising World Contributing Editor Jim Carrier; and Don Street!
