About Men Radio is a show about men. Not all men, mind you, but specifically about a group of lifelong friends coping with rapidly changing gender roles and how they interact with their partners, their kids, their co-workers and each other. We post periodically but each episode is funny, feisty and very, very real.
||ExplicitTalkin' Mother's Day||Ah, Mother's Day. That day of the year that brings with it a mixture of guilt, apprehension, obligation and confusion. You know: The essential ingredients of any familial relationship. For Pedro and Chris, the relationships with their mothers are fraught with baggage -- some more than others. In Chris's case, it's more the size of carry-on luggage. And with Pedro...well, let's size it up as a steamer trunk. And having the bombardment of commercial messages from retailers, florists, online advertisers and the media about the importance of Mother's Day does not help. Should we, as sons, act out of a sense of obligation? Shouldn't we be honoring our mothers all year-round? Do we automatically owe them our respect and love because, let's face it, they gave birth to us, wiped our asses when we were little and put up with our nonsense for lo these many years? How do we define the relationships with our mothers as sons and adult men and fathers ourselves? Well, we dive into all of that in this latest episode of About Men Radio. Give a listen and tell your friends. And by the way, would it kill you to call your mom just once in a while?||5/12/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitFacebook Does a Faceplant and We’re Paying the Price||Farmville. Mafia Wars. Poking friends. Ah, Facebook. Not that many years ago it seemed so innocent and harmless. Taking online quizzes about which Harry Potter character I was? Checking in with the locations of places I visited? Sharing personal details of my day-to-day life? Of course! Why not? What could possibly go wrong? Fast-forward to … Continue reading Facebook Does a Faceplant and We’re Paying the Price → The post Facebook Does a Faceplant and We’re Paying the Price appeared first on About Men Radio.||4/18/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitRetirement? Hahahahaha!||There is a kitchen magnet I have that boasts about drinking coffee: “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” Yeah, it’s a similar feeling I have about retirement. I’ll retire when I’m dead. When you are in your 20s, retirement, pensions, 401(k) and Social Security are a foreign language. Saving for when I’m in my 60s? Pshaw! … Continue reading Retirement? ||ExplicitPutting Fitness Back on Our Menu||Let’s be honest: Our attempt in 2016 to launch the About Men Radio Fitness Challenge — in which members of the posse pledged to improve our eating and exercise habits — collapsed quicker than a football handled by Tom Brady. But wait! Brady recently came up in a conversation between Chris and Pedro, and it … Continue reading Putting Fitness Back on Our Menu → The post Putting Fitness Back on Our Menu appeared first on About Men Radio.||1/8/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitThis Is Not The Star Wars Movie You Were Looking For||WARNING: This episode of About Men Radio contains spoilers for SW:TLJ!!! A small arthouse film by the name of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was quietly released in a few theaters across the known universe this past week. It’s getting good reviews from critics but decidedly mixed reviews from its paying customers. ||ExplicitMen, We Face Our Reckoning Post-Harvey Weinstein||How many times did Pedro and I *think* we were ready to record a show addressing the issue spawned by revelations of how movie mogul Harvey Weinstein treated women? Probably at least five times, I would say. And at every turn, when we would get our schedules lined up and prepare…Boom! There would come another … Continue reading Men, We Face Our Reckoning Post-Harvey Weinstein → The post Men, We Face Our Reckoning Post-Harvey Weinstein appeared first on About Men Radio.||12/4/2017||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitWho’s a True New Yawker? We Put Ourselves to the Test||In this episode of About Men Radio, Chris and Pedro debate the finer points of country vs. city living. The discussion is not exactly the opening credits of “Green Acres,” but let’s just say that Chris was more the Eddie Albert character in this talk and Pedro identified more strongly with Eva Gabor. (Well, that’s … Continue reading Who’s a True New Yawker? We Put Ourselves to the Test → The post Who’s a True New Yawker? ||ExplicitOn a Haunted Hayride, A-Shrieking I Will Go||If it’s Halloween time, it must mean it’s time for Chris to show the bravery of Sir Robin from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” You remember him, right? He was not exactly brave but pretended to be. Well, in the spirit of Sir Robin, Chris went on a haunted hayride at Woodloch Resort in … Continue reading On a Haunted Hayride, A-Shrieking I Will Go → The post On a Haunted Hayride, A-Shrieking I Will Go appeared first on About Men Radio.||10/29/2017||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitA White Guy and a Puerto Rican Talk About Racism||In this episode of About Men Radio, Pedro and I discuss the thorny intractable issue of racism and how we’ve experienced it. It’s a white dude (me) and a Puerto Rican (Pedro), who both grew up in the Bronx, talking about a topic that in many ways is the third rail of polite conversation. I … Continue reading A White Guy and a Puerto Rican Talk About Racism → The post A White Guy and a Puerto Rican Talk About Racism appeared first on About Men Radio.||10/16/2017||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitHeavy on Coffee and Light on Sleep||Sleep but not nearly enough. Wake. Drink coffee. Drink more coffee. In fact, just pour the pot over your head to wake up. Rinse and repeat. If this sounds familiar, welcome to the crowd. Some of us might rise, but we won’t shine. As a society, we’re chronically not getting enough sleep and let’s face … Continue reading Heavy on Coffee and Light on Sleep → The post Heavy on Coffee and Light on Sleep appeared first on About Men Radio.||7/31/2017||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitDoes ‘Wonder Woman’ Signal a Culture Shift in Hollywood?||One of the best movies this summer far and away has been “Wonder Woman.” The movie stars Gal Gadot, who is not just a pretty face. She’s got poise, comic sensibilities, acrobatic fight moves and a presence that really lights up a screen. And a special bonus: The movie is now the highest-grossing live-action film … Continue reading Does ‘Wonder Woman’ Signal a Culture Shift in Hollywood? → The post Does ‘Wonder Woman’ Signal a Culture Shift in Hollywood? appeared first on About Men Radio.||6/26/2017||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitWe Swear, Cussing Is a Way of Life||There is just something so primal about cussing and swearing that it’s difficult for us guys to suppress. Hey! A*****e! Are you paying attention to what I’m sayin’ here?! See what I mean? Whether used to vent (“I can’t f*****g believe it!), to make an assertion (“That is f****d up”) or to beg a question … Continue reading We Swear, Cussing Is a Way of Life → The post We Swear, Cussing Is a Way of Life appeared first on About Men Radio.||6/6/2017||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitThe Meaning of Manliness||In ancient Greece, men were encouraged to let the tears flow. Dudes in the 17th century looked for a virile, masculine edge by slapping on a pair of high-heels, and it was perfectly masculine for a man to wear a pink silk suit with floral embroidery in the 18th century. As the cultural ideal of manhood continues … Continue reading The Meaning of Manliness → The post The Meaning of Manliness appeared first on About Men Radio.||5/15/2017||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitChris and Pedro Come Clean About Housework||So after three years of doing this podcast, Chris and Pedro decided to go where fools rush in and angels fear to tread and that is an honest man-to-man conversation about chores and housework. What is revealed is as about as pretty as balled-up sweaty socks turned inside out. ||ExplicitBONUS EPISODE: We Really Are Getting Too Old For This||It seemed like such a good idea at the time. Chris and Pedro were just planning on having a drink or two after work at a local dive bar. What could possibly go wrong? ||ExplicitLost Podcast Is in the Wild!||We found it! Pedro and I recorded an episode a few weeks ago that fell somewhere into the couch cushions but fear not, we’ve dusted it off and it’s as good as new. Well, almost. ||Explicit“Manopause” and Having a Midlife Crisis||A midlife crisis makes for good movie fodder: There is the wayward husband who suddenly wants to take up with a younger woman or the guy who believes that getting a bright shiny sports car will make him youthful. The truth is having a midlife crisis is not just the stuff of fiction. It is … Continue reading “Manopause” and Having a Midlife Crisis → The post “Manopause” and Having a Midlife Crisis appeared first on About Men Radio.||12/18/2016||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitLocked and Loaded||I busted Father John’s chops for not wanting to join the rest of us at the shooting range. He took it in stride — as he always has — and just casually lit up his cigarette with the air of a man who’s heard it all before. You see, John dislikes guns and he wasn’t going to … Continue reading Locked and Loaded → The post Locked and Loaded appeared first on About Men Radio.||10/18/2016||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitHey You Kids! Get Off My Lawn!||I think I have reached the official “hey-kids-get-off-my-lawn” age. I do not think of myself as being a curmudgeon but I am starting to embrace being curmudgeonly. I revel in the things that annoy me and enjoy being self-righteous about it. ||ExplicitNo More Excuses, It’s Time to Get Healthy||Longtime listeners of the podcast know that getting the entire AMR Posse to reach a consensus on anything is quite the achievement so this episode may come as a shock. Father John, Coach Silvio, SuperDad, Mele Mel along with yours truly, El Kaiser, have unanimously agreed that getting healthy should be our top priority for the rest of the year. … Continue reading No More Excuses, It’s Time to Get Healthy → The post No More Excuses, It’s Time to Get Healthy appeared first on About Men Radio.||7/31/2016||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitTalking Men’s Health||In this latest episode of About Men Radio shenanigans, Pedro and Chris talk about men’s health — no, not the magazine — but what it takes for men our age to be of sound bodies. ||ExplicitFather’s Day Roundtable||As fathers, we hardly lead the lives of television characters such as “Father Knows Best,” “Leave It to Beaver,” or “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father.” Unlike television characters, our parenting efforts lack a script. ||ExplicitWe’ve Got About as Much Job Security as a “Game of Thrones” Character||This sure as heck is not your father’s economy or job market. Gone are the days when a person could expect to start, stay and retire from the same company after 30 or more years of service. You are likely to switch jobs any number of times as opportunities — and companies — ebb and … Continue reading We’ve Got About as Much Job Security as a “Game of Thrones” Character → The post We’ve Got About as Much Job Security as a “Game of Thrones” Character appeared first on About Men Radio.||5/25/2016||Free||View in iTunes|
||Explicit“Mansplaining?” Let Us ‘Splain It to You||Just because Pedro and I are men does not mean we can explain everything about what our gender does. Take for instance “mansplaining,” the way men will insert themselves into a conversation and talk to a woman like she was a 4-year-old and the man was the Great Wizard of Oz. First five minutes of the first episode were so devoid of direction and annoying I had to unsubscribe. Bad.
Waste of time!
I was excited to check out this podcast until I realized it's just 3 goof balls with some recording equipment sitting around talking about nothing. 10 minutes in and they literally talk about nothing! They just bounce around from topic to topic and making lame jokes. You guys should set out what you meant to do and actually make a podcast about men or just change the name to "our weekly social hour in the basement"
A surprisingly good podcast! Actually, It's exceptionally good.
I gave this show a try before reading the negative comments and it's clear the reviewers completely missed the point of the show. I've listened to all 3 episodes and found the last one especially good. It was funny and surprisingly touching.
