POST-TRAUMATIC WINNER: Wade Cates… former Marine NCO, the “Socrates of the Semi” & father of Juan… who took his life last May

At 10:09 PM on June 6th of 2022, I received a long email from a guy named Wade Cates.  At 11:15 PM, I woke up, read the email, and told him to call me if he was still awake. We spoke the next day.

Wade is a former Marine NCO, he drives a semi-truck for a living… hauling a lot of steel between Jackson, Tennessee, Birmingham, Alabama, and Savannah, Georgia. He is rightly proud of his beautiful family and more than loves a good cigar.

The story that you will hear Wade tell is not an easy one to listen to; it’s the story of Juan’s suicide and just some of what his family has dealt with in the aftermath. But in that story, I know you will hear Wade’s depth, his resolve to exit the Valley of the Shadow of Death with his family and ultimately live a great life.

I am proud to call him my friend.

THE ALL MARINE RADIO HOUR: Woody Williams, the Marine Corps’ last living Medal of Honor recipient of World War II passes away… I was fortunate enough to interview him… here it is

CWO4 Woody Williams, USMC (ret) is a Marine Corps legend.  He was the recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions against Japanese forces on the island of Iwo Jima and was the last surviving Marine Corps World War II Medal of Honor recipient.  He joined ALL MARINE RADIO at the Marine Corps Marathon to discuss his participation in the 2018 Marine Corps Marathon as well as the work his foundation, the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation does to support the construction of memorials to Gold Star Families around the nation.

If you look at his foundation’s website you see the following:

Wood Williams was a delightful man, a great citizen of our nation, a courageous and selfless Marine who continued to make a difference in communities around the nation as he endeavored to honor Gold Star Families until his death.  This interview is INCREDIBLE listening… but it is simply him, a truly wonderful and lovely man.  It was certainly our privilege to have been touched by his life… may God bless Woody Williams.

Mac runs a great podcast!

I’ve listened for over 5 years. It’s a truly great podcast that I recommend to everyone, even my non-military friends like to listen now! I never miss the “Grant Newsham” or the “Mensa Brothers” segments (Jeff, Tim and Will). On another note I miss (The Gunner) who was featured on his past segment “Mike and Mike”. And to the listener who was critical of the Mensa Brothers, “I’m sure there’s a great BLM podcast just for you!”

papa bot ,

Mike - you opened my eyes today.

Mike came to my base today and gave us the Post Traumatic Winning talk. I call it a talk, because i thought this was more than a class.

He put trauma, in all its forms, into perspective and in words that resonated with me. The bottom line is that “it”, trauma, is something that everybody deals with in some way. And that it isn’t limited to combat stresses. I’ve never really considered myself a traumatized person, and while i still think that, i took a look at the things that have happened to me over the last few years and i realized that they have indeed been affecting me in a negative way. I’ve lost loved ones and friends, and if i look in the mirror and am honest with myself, i can see that i am not dealing with it in the way it needs to be dealt with.

Mike then went on to describe how to deal with stress and trauma in terms that Marines (and anyone else) can understand. It wasn’t a DoD power point, well intentioned but ultimately hollow. It wasn’t a civilian presentation on mental health, patronizing or condescending. It was just talk with a Marine who was open and understanding, and helpful in a way that let us still feel like Marines and not like a broken piece of equipment or some kind of burden on those around us.

Mike, you spoke to me today. And it meant a lot to me. And I’ll make sure i take it with me and pay it forward. Thank you

I love the Marines, but I’m tired of these guys being wrong, time after time, in real time.
