Practical and informative - yet highly entertaining - personal finance!
I've been an avid listener of Marketplace Money (and Marketplace) for quite some time now and have always been highly impressed at the manner in which the staff at Marketplace manages to mix practical and informative personal finance news and advice, with witty and entertaining commentary. Host Kai Ryssdal is my favorite radio personality currently on air due to his unique ability to deliver what could be very tedious information in a way that makes it fun to listen to each week. (I hate it when he's on vacation because no one else can do it like he can!) Economics Editor Chris Farrell has got to be one of the most proficient and pragmatic personal finance gurus around, offering sound (and brutally honest!) advice to listeners week after week. The Marketplace Money Mail Bag and Chris Farrell's "What's Smart, What's Stupid, and What's the Straight Story" are, to me, the most enlightening portions of the show, probably because Chris tells it like it is when it comes to managing money. Even if you think you're too young to start thinking about money management, or you think that personal finance is more boring than watching paint dry, give Marketplace Money a chance! You may be pleasantly surprised at what you hear! Plus, now it is free! Up until this week, I was paying a subscription cost at Audible to listen to it every week. It was worth every penny, but if I can save a $22.95 subscription charge, I am more than happy to do so! I promised to do something "Chris Farrell-worthy" with my new found savings.
Failing Miserably Since Tess Left
Phony, inane, boring hosts with some really awful guests (like Ben Dattner) make for a very non-helpful program. Just fast forwarded through five podcasts and unsubscribed. Very disappointed in the current state of this once really interesting program. Sort of seems like they're trying to appeal to younger listeners. News flash -- younger listeners aren't idiots.
New format needs refining
New format has ditched best part of marketplace money - In-depth q&a with real people. It made show relevant and lively. Now less emphasis on personal finance but more repetitive w/ other marketplace shows. My suggestion: less pundits (eg, Brunch), more people! Will keep listening if show returns to personal finance roots. And glad What's in Your Pocket is gone. Good start!
