Description

Jon Brantingham talks about everything related to music composition, music theory, and creativity, to get you started on the right foot while learning to compose. Discover what you need to be doing to consistently grow as a budding composer, what tips and tricks will make the process a little less painful, and most importantly, what you can do to find your own composing voice. Jon is a composer, music composition teacher, business owner, former Army helicopter pilot, father and husband. He doesn't enjoy long walks on the beach, but instead prefers to jump in and surf. Whether you like to write in a classical or romantic style, like Jon, or you like to write 4 minutes of bleeps and bloops and call that music, or maybe you are a singer-songwriter, the Art of Composing podcast will be your guide to learning the art and craft of music composition.

Customer Reviews

If you’re interested in music composition, this is a great place to start!

This podcast is very well done. Jon explains his ideas very clearly, and they make a lot of sense. I’ve been composing for years, but still learn from The Art of Composing blog every time I read an article.

If you’re interested in music composition, this is a great place to start. I look forward to future episodes!

For those interested in exploring the 'Craft' behind Music Composition

Jon brings a very intelligent, concise, and logical discussion about the issues and tools anyone interested in musical composition must consider.

It is geared toward 'common practice' era ideas. This is good for building a foundation in studying/writing the most recognized stylistic music of the western tradition or simply 'Classical' music.
It is the method currently used in our college classrooms 'Theory I-IV' classes

If you are not a beginner, you may find it interesting to listen to, to compare already formed thoughts on the issues of 'creative' and 'craft' based composition.

As most established musicians have students of their own still finding their way to their voice and craft, it helps to get an outside view on how to teach and approach something as deep as this subject.

What is also very much appreciated is the very friendly and positive attitude that Jon brings to the discussion. Not intimidating in the least but welcoming.

A+

Great advice & perspective on composing. Posting 5 stars in hopes of more episodes. Just starting my first film score, so I look forward to that subject being addressed more in future episodes. Keep up the good work John!
