Art is the truest expression of the workings of the mind, free from learned language. More than that, it is the visual expression of culture, politics, society, religion, emotion, zeitgeist, channeled through the brush, chisel, or hands of creative individuals. Understanding art allows us to understand history: to pin it with images, and pepper it with the faces, colours, drama and expression of its time. This series is designed to give bite-sized insights into the world of Art History, bringing one image to life across a wide-ranging discussion with experts. History is never far from view, so each image will be expanded to sit within the cultural and historical context that produced it. Presented by Janina Ramirez

wonderful podcast!

loved the first two episodes! very cool. I went to Ravenna once, and am so glad to know more about what I saw. Go Theodora! looking forward to more of the Art Detective.

An art podcast for novices & experts alike!

Dr. Janina Ramirez's podcast will help you to look at and appreciate artworks more deeply. It's fun, witty, but also very serious about discussing the ideas that went into its creation.
Don't know anything about art? Your host and her guests will teach you to see what they are seeing with the aide of links to Wikipedia, you'll see the work of art without going to a museum. It is also a joy for those who already know and appreciate art. I'm an art historian by training. I used to teach the subject to high school and college students. Art Detective is the best podcast I've found to keep me in touch with art objects in a fresh way.

I'm a fan of all of the shows from the History Hit Network, and this is a terrific addition to the network, both in format and subject.
