Let the Debate Begin

Thomas Jefferson wrote "It matters not to me if my neighbour has one god or twenty gods. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." In "Faith and Reason," Bill Moyers goes Jefferson's ideal of toleration one better, encouraging our embracing the ideals of empathy and understanding. Moyer engages “free thinking” artists in a fascinating, wide-ranging, and insightful dialog on faith, reason, and modernity. While empathy and understanding are stressed, uncritical acceptance is not. As Moyers' guest Colin McGinn puts it, "You should not persecute people for their beliefs. It doesn't mean you can't criticize their beliefs." I have only seen the Salmon Rushdie conversation, and he is pointed in his criticism of the Islamic regime in Iran, comparing it to fascist and totalitarian regimes of Hitler and Stalin; however, he is careful to distinguish between the leaders in Iran, who maintain their grip on power behind religious robes, and the people of Iran who believe in Islam. The cynical use of religion in politics is not limited to the ayatolahs in Iran, and I look forward to future programs in this series. Such discussions are the lifeblood of an open society, and this one is long overdue.

Another excellent Bill Moyers program

Reasoned discussion of a topic which is often (and too easily) distorted and abused. Thanks. I hope in future Bill will offer more of his excellent content in Podcast form.

wonderful show

It is refreshing to hear thoughtful, intelligent discussions of this complex and important topic. I doubt the negative reviews are based on the show's content--they strike me as knee-jerk responses from people who have dismissed the show unheard. This is a pity because it has much to offer the listener, no matter what his or her ideological background happens to be. Anyone who gives it a chance will realize that this show is neither anti-religion in general nor anti-Christian in particular. The questions raised and ideas explored are well worth considering.
