||Clean016: Immediate Versus Ongoing Publicity||While recently driving between Phoenix and Tucson, I began listening to Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger. One section of it prompted some thoughts around book publicity and why both immediate publicity and ongoing word of mouth are critical to an author's long-term success. In this episode you will discover: The one-day activity you can easily undertake that will prove how often we promote via word of mouth without even realizing it.Why negative publicity still triggers a response that benefits a product or serviceThe big bonus of self-publishing when it comes to ongoing word of mouth (which you can't take advantage of when you're published by a traditional publishing house)The lifespan of a publicity push for a traditionally published book versus a self-published bookWhy the long tail of a book launch contains the most potential for opportunityHow the implementation of ongoing word of mouth promotion strategies must be approached like sleep-training a babyWhy the correlations we tend to draw between super successful products are often quite misleading Resources Mentioned Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger||3/22/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||Clean015: On Habit||"Is it better to write everyday or to write a certain number of words everyday?" This is a question a client recently asked, and I immediately knew my answer. ||Clean014: Just Choose Already||EPISODE SUMMARY Are you having trouble making a choice in your life? Perhaps it's a seemingly simple choice such as whether or not to put honey or jelly on your peanut butter sandwich. Perhaps it's more complicated -- which website template or email service provider is the best to spend money on? Paralysis by analysis -- regardless of how superficial or life-altering the decision may be -- is pervasive and it's likely keeping you from being able to move forward in one or more areas of your writing and publishing career. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL DISCOVER: The truth about the "right" choicesExactly how to make what feels like an impossibly difficult choice so that you can move on with the rest of your to-do listThe real reason WHY we don't simply make a choice and what we can learn from itHow to learn to love the process of choosing and committing to our choice without fearing that it's the "wrong" choice TO LEARN MORE: www.PublishAProfitablebook.com www.Facebook.com/groups/authorscollective Twitter.com/ElizabethLyons Instagram.com/ElizabethLyonsDesigns||3/7/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||Clean013: What's Your Story?||EPISODE SUMMARY What's the story your telling YOURSELF about your future as an author? Whether you want to write full-time, as a side gig, or in order to build your influence and credibility in your field of expertise, it's critical to address the story you tell yourself about your future in this space. The HOW of writing, publishing and marketing a book can be taught. What fascinates me is that once people have the HOW the book oftentimes still does not appear. Why is that? It's because of the story the author is telling himself or herself about her potential in this space and how that influences the actions they take and the progress they make. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL DISCOVER: How writing a book and learning to drive a car perfectly mirror each other in terms of mindset challengesWhy our 33-Day Book Writing Bootcamp (and similar approaches) are so successful at setting authors' momentum on fireThe excuses 90% of people make in order to justify "checking out" from finishing or further promoting their book (and how to stop making them)The HOW of shifting the story (so that it ends in your favor) TO LEARN MORE: www.PublishAProfitablebook.com www.Facebook.com/groups/authorscollective Twitter.com/ElizabethLyons Instagram.com/ElizabethLyonsDesigns||2/20/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||Explicit012: Getting Past Imposter Syndrome||Today we're talking about Imposter Syndrome, a.k.a. "I feel like a fraud." Do you want to stop ditching your idea because you feel like an imposter? And stop worrying that people may see you as a "fraud?" Imposter Syndrome (or some variation thereof) is experienced by nearly every single author at some point in his or her career. In the end, as with so many other negative feelings, it stems from fear. The question is: fear of WHAT? In today's episode, you'll discover: Why the thing you fear is EXACTLY what readers desperately want The four qualities that actually make you credible to readers (none is a fancy degree or established tribe of raving fans) Proof that anyone can shift his or her mindset around imposter syndrome (you'll never guess what award I received as a high school senior) Two mindsets that set authors up for mediocrity from the get-go The TRUTH about the importance of impressive credentials The SIMPLE EXERCISE that will jumpstart your recovery from Imposter Syndrome (and it's something you can do today!)||2/16/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||Explicit011: Reasons Why Your Book Isn't A Bestseller - Part 1||There are 4 core reasons why your book isn't (yet) a bestseller. They are: You haven't written it!You skipped over the critical steps thinking they were unimportantYour marketing plan is non-existent or stinks (just being honest!) With regard to the first reason (your book isn't yet written), if you fall into this category, in all likelihood: You're waiting for a critical moment to get started (when we finish moving, once summer break is over, after the kids start school, once I feel like my story is complete...)You don't know how to get started or what to do once the writing is completeYou fear that you don't have the credibility and/or platform to be successful The truth: these are all different ways of justifying an underlying fear. And the best way to overcome that fear, not just as an author but as a human being, is to address it. In today's episode, I get honest about these fears, where they come from and how to combat them. ||Explicit005: Word Count, Writing Deadlines and Copyright Questions - Book Writing + Publishing Lab||PPB PODCAST: EPISODE 005When you don’t have a traditional publisher to enforce a writing deadline, you have to enforce that deadline yourself. It can be hard to declare a book “done.” In this week’s podcast, Genevieve and I discuss self-imposed deadlines as well as my definitive answer to the ever-burning “How many words do I have to have” question. Finally, we talk about who owns copyright—author or publisher. Oh, and a VERY IMPORTANT PSA on whether or not to single or double-space between sentences. *Hint: this could save you hours of editing re-work. ||Explicit004: How to Choose a Publishing Approach - Book Writing + Publishing Lab||PPB PODCAST: EPISODE 004 When Genevieve Georget’s Facebook post went viral back in September 2015, she was contacted by several publishers (both traditional and vanity/hybrid). And she was overwhelmed with questions. Is it best to sign away rights to an as-yet-unwritten book to get the advance from a traditional publisher? If she went with a traditional publisher, how long would it be until her book was available for sale? Was the $8000 quote she received from a vanity press reasonable when it only included 100 print copies? (It wasn’t.)If she self-published, where would she even start? These are all questions we talked through and address again in this week’s podcast. Additionally, we’ll let you in on what intangible quality won us over about the designer we’ve selected to create Gen’s book cover— and convinced us that, without doubt, she was the right fit for this project. ||Explicit003: What Constitutes a Best Selling Book - Book Writing + Publishing Lab||PPB PODCAST: EPISODE 003One cannot simply claim to be a New York Times bestselling author. Nor can one simply claim to be a Wall Street Journal bestselling author. One can simply claim, however, to be a national bestselling author, or an Amazon bestselling author, or a Top Ten bestselling author. Why? Because beyond the bigger, traditional publications, the term “bestselling” is loosely defined. One can be a bestselling Amazon author and support that by showing that she hit the Top 100 on May 6, 2014 for 3 hours. Or, one can be a national bestselling author because…well…because he says he is and who’s going to challenge him on it? But while authors focus on the word “bestseller,” it’s important to realize that one can BUY his or her way onto the major bestseller lists. And, in the end, unless claiming (or legitimately having) bestseller status is the end goal, it’s not what authors should shoot for. In this podcast, Genevieve Georget and I discuss (among other things, including the current state of book printing and cover design quotes for Gen’s forthcoming book) the question authors would be better served by answering as they prepare to launch their book. ||Explicit001: Authors — What Is Your Why?||As Genevieve Georget and I began talking through the high-level details of her book (scheduled to launch September 30, 2016), she understandably had lots of questions. Many of them are, perhaps, questions you’ve had as you thought about writing a book. Will anyone want to read it?How will I market it?How do I find a good printer?Do I sell through Amazon? How do I get book signings (and do they really even matter)?I promised her that we would address each and every one of her questions and concerns but first, I had one very important question I needed her to answer. Without knowing the answer to this question, it would be challenging for us to move forward and be confident that we were on the “right” path for her project. And that question was: In the series premier of THE MAKING OF A BESTSELLING BOOK, Gen and I discuss:Why she REALLY writesHer honest opinion of the post that so many instantly lovedHandling the haters (because they WILL come)Her own personal WHY when it comes to the writing and publishing of her first bookI’d love to hear from you! Great info. Nice tone.
Imposter syndrome episode!
This show is great. When she said “people are going to resonate with your story and where you WERE and where you CAME FROM”
That got me. Practical advice from someone who has obviously been there and gets what I’m going through as far as self doubt about my book. Awesome work
