Description

The CAMPAIGN podcast is an actual play podcast where a small, consistent group of Chicago nerds get together to record role-playing games. It is hosted by Kat Murphy. CAMPAIGN focuses on long-form or “campaign” gaming. By this, we mean that each week, Kat leads a team of improvisers (James D’Amato, John Patrick Coan, and Johnny O’Mara) through a continuous story that could take months or even years to complete. CAMPAIGN is currently set in the Star Wars universe, and uses the Edge of the Empire gaming system. If CAMPAIGN has a goal, it’s to show how character-driven storytelling can positively impact all classic elements of long-form analogue gaming, and turn out a compelling and entertaining narrative.

It All Tracks

Like its sister podcast One Shot campaign is witty and energetic with a great troup of actors. James D'mato, Johnny O'Mara, and JPC are funny as ever, and the plot and story are richer with Kat Murphy giving a more methodical approach to GMing. A great ride so far.

A Hilarious and Engaging Role-Playing Podcast

An excellent companion to the One Shot podcast, but also a terrific stand-alone series. Campaign is a hilarious podcast that follows a consistent role-playing group playing an ongoing adventure in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire. It’s not quite as silly/out there as One Shot tends to be, but what we get instead is excellent story and character work by everyone at the table… and at least one or two moments in each episode guaranteed to leave you in stitches. Whole-heartedly recommended for any role-playing fans, or those interested in picking up the hobby!

Troubling...

I gave this show a five star review back in July. My issue is that it has continued to improve since then. I logged in today hoping that there would be some way for me to give the show an even higher rating, but no luck. Man, what a letdown.

Seriously, though. Kat, James, Johnny, and JPC clearly love doing this show, and that shines through in every episode. You will not find quicker wits on an actual play podcast. The silliest throwaway joke can spin out into a major storyline in seconds, and the gang always manages to roll with it in the way that only trained improvisers and the galaxy's greatest GM could. The sound design and editing are excellent. This show is what you'd get if Douglas Adams had written Star Wars fanfic.
My only caveat is this: Start from the beginning! This show showcases just how amazingly a long-running RPG campaign can allow characters and storylines to develop over time. A new listener who dives in with the current epsiode is going to miss out on so much. Ideally, check out episodes 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, and 28 of Campaign's excellent sister show, One Shot, to get the full story.
