A Great Spin on Masks

When I was recently getting into Masks and learning how the game works, I was eager to find more Masks APs to better get a handle on the systems. This is the second one I found, and it's a great spin on the system that showcases some of the variants the game can accomodate. It makes for a grittier story that's well worth your time

Characterization, Character Development, and Relationships

These are the first three things I look for in any narrative entertainment, and CN has the first two in spades, and as time goes on they're rapidly getting better with the third. I'm just about to listen to episode nine, I have no idea what's going to happen, and the anticipation alone is getting me pumped!

The players are enthusiastic and unabashedly embrace their characters' qualities and flaws. The GM, in keeping with PbtA principles, is a diehard fan of the characters and wants to put them in situations that will push them to their limits. It didn't take long for this to become one of my favorite RPG AP podcasts. And that's on a list that also includes One Shot, The Drunk and the Ugly, and Role Playing Public Radio.

On the critical side, I think the GM introduces too many custom player moves, although this could be a side effect of the group using the variant rules for physical harm, which itself has led to some near-deaths that resulted in very intense scenes and character growth. I also think that the GM overuses the Take a Powerful Blow move, and too often he dictates the PCs' actions after dice have been rolled, rather than letting them say what they do and then having the dice dictate the consequence of that roll. But even in spite of these criticisms, it is one of the best APs I'm aware of. Everyone clearly trusts each other and is having a ton of fun.

And an extra thank you to Whelmed: The Young Justice Files for the interview episode that enabled me to discover this podcast.

Intense and full of fun!

I love how this game plays out. The crew makes the stories intense and enjoyable. The game play is interesting and keeps you locked in. It makes every choice feel like there are really consequences. The GM gets a little merciless on the players. Love this show!
