Decoding Chengyu

Laszlo Montgomery of the inimitable China History Podcasts brings us amuse bouche episodes in this new podcast. Each short episode focuses on a single chengyu. Best translated as sayings or idioms, chengyu are so much more. Usually only 4 characters long, the literal translation leaves the student of Chinese befuddled. However, the rich historical story behind each one packs a wealth of meaning that is common knowledge to Chinese people. Laszlo helps us navigate these tidbits of Chinese language and culture. For those of us who have been ardent fans of his China History Podcast, Laszlo's understated style is the perfect delivery vehicle for learning more about China.

Amazing for those learning Chinese

This podcast does a fantastic job of giving you bite sized explanations of common Chinese phrases. It gives you a greater understanding of the language and the culture through the window of common idioms.

Really fun chunks of Chinese language and culture

Laszlo Montgomery, host of The China History Podcast, brings that same wonderful style to 成语, the 4-character idioms that make Chinese so colorful. In each episode, Laszlo gives you the story -- often from ancient China -- behind one of these short phrases. They're rich, colorful and give you a new window onto Chinese culture and history. And for Chinese learners/speakers, these phrases win you mad brownie points in conversation with native speakers. I highly recommend the show, as well as Laszlo's China History Podcast and China Vintage Hour.
