Lugubrious Complaints, no Debate

I listened to four episodes of this podcast, so I really did try to give it a fair shake. I was hoping for high-minded conservative debate along the lines of something like what one got from the late William F. Buckley, Jr.—with whom I almost always disagree, but for whose intellectual and philosophical rigor I have tremendous respect. Unfortunately, what I came away with was the impression that this is a sad, angry man (Victor Davis Hanson) raging against the dying of the light, eulogizing a society which he sees as essentially lost to "the left" and, barring some miracle, to ultimate decline and fall. There is no debate here, there is no pushback against his ideas; this podcast doesn't even seem to have anything to do with the classics, for that matter. Mr. Hanson is simply given free rein to voice his complaints, and he has no debating partner; his ideas go unchallenged. Of course, that's fine—after all, it is, as we always say, a free country—but one would expect something of a better product coming out of an institution related to a university as prestigious and highly regarded as Stanford. If academic rigor were to be used as a standard (even by proxy) for judging this podcast, one has a difficult time seeing how pass that test.

VDH is one of the most important voices in America.

Victor Davis Hanson's life work as a farmer, classicist, and military historian gives him an expertise, insight and perspective that is almost entirely lost in our current discourse and debate. In a country where the conversation on all sides often misses the mark, Hanson is the signal amidst all the noise.

Love VDH's perspective

Wonderful, concise ruminations on important issues of the day. I especially enjoy VDH's unique perspective, as an intellectual and resident of CA's Central Valley. Interviewer is also tremendous - clear, informed questions with NO rambling (a problem with other conservative podcasts.
