Description

This podcast explores why and how people are punished in the United States and throughout the world, ranging from criminal punishment to disciplining children. Each episode features a fifteen minute interview with a punisher (e.g., a judge or parent), someone punished (e.g., convicts or children), or those who study punishment (e.g., academics). Topics include: Why do we punish at all? How has punishment changed over time? How does punishment differ in other countries? The podcast is always informative, entertaining, and, when the need arises, even a bit irreverent. Listen up...or be punished.

Cruel and Unusual

Unfortunately the study Criminal Justice has a suffered an apalling lack of creative thought and (gasp) humor for thirty plus years. Dr. Shemtob is able to seriously address one of the most pressing ethical issues of our time with both. The American approach to punishment has been an stain on our cultural landscape since de Tocqueville. Apparently Dr. Shemtob believes 5 generations of injustice via idiocy is enough. I challenge anyone to find a textbook or reader that adresses this collection of issues with as much clarity and aplomb.

A must-listen

Great podcasts so far by Professor Shemtob. He's had some excellent guests so far, offering a wide range of perspectives, and he asks them thoughtful, probing questions. Anyone with an interest in criminal justice, philosophy, or law should tune in to listen and learn.
