Fascinating stories -- excited for this one!
As a mild antique enthusiast, I came to this podcast skeptically open-minded. What I found, though, was absolutely fascinating. I came away with enough dinner-party facts to last a lifetime, and a new appreciation for the many objects I encounter in my daily lives (none of which, sadly, are really as nice as the Windsor chair discussed in the first episode!). Excited to add this to my weekly rotation!
Ben Miller as Interviewer
As has been commented, I loved all the offshoots from the object in question - learning bits of trivial (and less so) history, small details about the item, and (in this episode, at least) some really good advice about buying antiques.
But, I most enjoyed that Ben Miller has the ability to play two complementary roles - antiques professional (he specializes in silver) and curious everyperson, making sure things don't get too "inside" for the average listener.
A reminder that history helps us look at the world with more depth
I really enjoyed this interview. It answered a lot of questions that I didn’t know I was curious about. Why are some chairs painted and not others? Why are some chairs stamped and others not? How did companies vertically integrate their operations in the 1800s? How did that looks like from a logistics point of view? Also is all old furniture fancy furniture? Do I get the best price at an auction? This a delightful plunge into the world of antiques and the rich history that informs our present.
