"Feud: Capote vs. the Swans" - Production Designer: Mark Ricker and Set Decorator: Cherish Hale

On this episode, I speak with Production Designer Mark Ricker and Set Decorator Cherish Hale. FX's Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is an eight episode limited series based on the best-selling book “Capote‘s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era" by Lawrence Leamer. (A book I devoured over last summer). The sets that Mark and Cherish create are lush, glamorous and enchanting. They previously collaborated on “Escape from Dennemora” and the Netflix series “Halston” and again their latest work is simply stunning. I’m a huge fan of Mark's work. I must have watched “Julie & Julia” a million times! Cherish has been a Set Decorator for more than 25 years and has Emmy, ADG and SDSA nominations and we both went to the same college! Small world! "The Color Purple" - Production Designer Paul Austerberry and Set Decorator Larry Dias

In this episode I speak with Set Decorator, Larry Dias and Production Designer, Paul Austerberry. They talk about the intricate process of creating the musical film version of the beloved book “The Color Purple”. From selecting locations in Georgia and building sets in a swamp and a waterfall  to antiquing and creating his own prop house of period dressing. We also discuss not just the color purple but the significance of color and palette, specifically the use of the color red as a symbol of Shug's passion and its impact on Sealy's perspective. This film dives deeper into some of the other minor characters which gives the opportunity to see one of my favorite sets of the film, Shug’s house. Loved hearing their creative process and how that brought the film to the screen. Are you a fan of TV and film production? "Napoleon" - Production Designer Arthur Max and Set Decorator Elli Griff

"Napoleon" - Production Designer Arthur Max and Set Decorator Elli Griff

This week I speak with one of the industries most influential Production Design teams: Production Designer Arthur Max and Set Decorator Elli Griff. I was absolutely thrilled to speak to them about their project “Napoleon” directed by Ridley Scott. To create the epic scale of the movie, Production Designer Arthur Max, a three-time Oscar® nominee (“Gladiator”, “American Gangster” and “The Martian”) who has collaborated with Scott on 15 films since 1997’s “G. I. Jane”, has seen the business of production design change immensely over the decades. “We have always built giant sets, but now, we use the spaces in different ways,” he explains. “When we made “Gladiator”, CGI was in its nascence. We were limited as to what we could achieve. Now, the scope of our ambitions has grown with it. But we're still in the school of thought that it's best to have a physical set to build off of, not just a complete CGI universe.” Set Decorator Elli Griff joined Max on “Gladiator” in Morocco, followed by “Black Hawk Down” and then “Man on Fire” for the late Tony Scott. More recently, Griff has worked on “Glass Onion”, which brought her an ADG Award, and they are both currently finishing up “Gladiator 2”. On the podcast we explore the intricate process of “Napoleon” design from color pallet to the Set Decor of elaborate tents and beds! Are you a fan of TV and film production?
