Episode 12: Greetings from the Island of Shame

You’re invited to the Desert Island Society, where Madeline and Xander ask and answer the classic question… If you were taken to a desert island, what would you bring? The dark times are upon us and the hated rituals of that loathsome winter holiday have already begun. As part of the unholy pact to produce the Halloween festivities we now present to you our penance, the first of our Christmas specials. This week we’re talking about that most ubiquitous of terrors, the first sign of the coming doom, Christmas music. From old standards to new favorites we dig through the muck and come up with only the finest in holiday tunes, rewarding them with our praise even while we banish the worst offenders to the hellish and bleak ISLAND OF SHAME!

Also why do we need a new Grinch movie every decade? Like I have to imagine the return on investment would be the same if you just re-released the old one into theaters.

From old favorites to exotic additions we cover all the bases and try to get to that one special dish that the holiday just wouldn’t feel right without. Along the way we remember thanksgivings past and try to pick through how the feelings of the day itself help enhance the flavor.

Also while I excised a lengthy political diatribe from this episode I would like you all to know that you are loved. The world is not a kind place but it is better with you in it. You’re always welcome here.

Episode X: Who Killed Mr. Pibb?

You’re invited to the Desert Island Society, where Madeline and Xander ask and answer the classic question… If you were taken to a desert island, what would you bring With the spooky season behind us we thought it was high time we got back to what made this show so much fun to begin with: food fights. We hop in the way back machine and lament, mourn, and fight over all those lovely snack foods that were snatched away from us too soon. We also are the first media outlet to link the Trump administration to the death of Mr. Pibb, the demotion of Captain Crunch from the admiralty and the suspicious disappearance of the fan favorite wonder ball. We are through the looking glass here people.

Also is it freaking anyone else out that kids today talk about the 90’s like we talked about the 80s? I’m not ready to be old.

Cool

I’m just giving you five stars but it’s pretty awesome to listen as well

Finally, a podcast I can selfishly feel I am a part of the conversation

As I listen to heated debates on pizza toppings, best vampires, and favorite foods that have been lost in history, I feel included. I get to yell back at my car speakers and headphones in either strong agreement or adamant “no you’re wrong” and feel a part of the conversation. That’s all I can ask for in a podcast; great chemistry and selfishly forcing my way into inclusion.

If you don't think this podcast is a delight, fight me

Sure, DIS has all the necessary components of a podcast - fantastic chemistry, wildly liberal use of a sound board, and wholesome and genuine vampire discussion - but it's more than just the basics. In a time where the world feels particularly grim, listening to Madeline and Xander explore their ties to the things they love is a the break we all need from mainlining the bad noise. If you haven't tried it yet, I suggest you light a candle, fling yourself down on your couch like Lord Henry on a divan, and give it a shot.
