This is the podcast we’ve been waiting for!

I’ve recently discovered Disrupting Japan podcast, and I’ve love it so much! I’m a Japanese technologist based in NYC, so this podcast provides me great source of startup insights. Tim is very knowledge about Japanese business, culture and people. I cannot wait hear his next interview!

Total Insider’s View on Startups in Japan

As the editor of a Tokyo-based tech & culture media source, I am of course obliged to cover startups locally and around Japan. I can say from experience that Tim's perspective and access are unparalleled. Given his 20 years of doing business in Japan and fluency in both the Western and Asian startup climates, listeners just won’t find any other English-language broadcaster with more historical and contemporary contextual awareness. Disrupting Japan is just getting started, but I’ve no doubt it will be the #1 source for Japanese startup and VC podcasting. Oh, and Tim’s a pretty nice dude, too.

This show disrupted my podcast queue

After the first episode, I moved the entire catalog up and binge-listened them all. Disrupting Japan showcases interesting guests with innovative ideas illuminated by Tim's pointed insights and put into context with his business experience. And the show is punctuated by humor and entertaining cultural nuggets. My favorite part is Tim's regular monologue episodes that are eye-opening. Or ear-opening, rather. Brain-opening?

Even if you have no interest in doing business in Japan, there are lessons to be learned here. Japan is ahead in its region so its economic history can be used in some ways as a roadmap for its neighbors. And demographically, the way Japan treats its elders (through products, technology, services, and policy) will be an important case study for nations also experiencing a shrinking and ageing population. If that kind of insight is useful to you, Disrupting Japan puts your finger on the pulse of Japan's emerging startup community.
