I attend IEP meetings for a living and you just can't compete with that level of crazy. This is the only podcast dedicated to helping parents navigate the IEP process. Warning: I've been told I have a Philly accent. I don't hear it. Also, I curse. It's something I'm working on as far as personal development. So please don't be put off. I'm trying. Inspired by her own son with disabilities, Lisa Lightner is an award-winning blogger and advocate. She has previously worked for her county's Arc and has served on the Boards of Directors for several disability organizations. Currently, she is her county's chairperson for the Right to Education Task Force, a federally decreed group set up in 1971 to ensure that all children in Pennsylvania had the opportunity to an education. When not attending IEP meetings with families or lobbying in Harrisburg and DC for disability rights, she can be found on the web at her IEP advice blog, A Day in our Shoes. She is known for her practical, realistic and implementable advice for parents.

Customer Reviews

She is an amazing resource for any parent or caregiver to a child with special needs. Not only in the school setting but outside resources too!!

Very Helpful

After an IEP meeting and having my request rejected and not receiving a full and appropriate PWN where they state why they are rejecting my requests I have gone back to my safe guards and back to Lisa’s website and now this podcast to give me the confidence to advocate for my child’s education by requesting a PWN. I am lucky enough to have great friends as well who are willing to help and support me along this journey. Don’t IEP alone is just a reminder that we should not try to go it along because we are stronger and more confident and better advocates for our children’s education when we do it with support.

Thank You

I’ve been on this journey for a couple years now. Fortunately, the past has been fairly easy because I was blessed with a teacher and an assistant that were absolutely amazing and honest with me about everything and weren’t afraid to fight for my baby. We were a team. This year is a different story. She has an amazing teacher, but everything else is disgraceful. She’s not receiving services outlined in her IEP and I’m getting zero info. Not to mention my daughter is mostly nonverbal. So I’ve started digging, researching, pulling out old numbers, etc. Lisa, you have given me confidence, inspiration, and so much information to prepare for my upcoming battle. The principal is very bullish and not accommodating to the SPED world, so it will be a fight. But you have given me some great tools to win, not only for my baby, but for all of the kiddos she is inhibiting. She doesn’t know what’s about to hit her.

Don't IEP Alone.
