solid discussion for reading along

I was looking for a new podcast, and I was also wanting to reread LOTR. Luckily the two intersected when I discovered Talking Tolkien. The dynamic of a hardcore fan, casual fan, and total newb makes for good discussion and a nice point of reference for any listener. Anyone struggling to start the Silmarillion would do will to listen along with their discussions.

There are a few minor quibbles that might make hardcore Tolkien scholars bristle, such as off pronunciations (not just from Chase -- those are endearing). "Earendil" should correctly be pronounced "ay-AR-en-dil", though even Cate Blanchett had a hard time with that one. A bit too much credence is given some times to theories that have little merit. While there are similarities between the Arkenstone and a Silmaril, the descriptions make it pretty clear they are not the same.

But if you can hold off from trying to argue with Jon, Katie, and Chase while listening here and there, it's a lot of fun and I'm enjoying reading along. I look forward to checking out some of their other podcasts when I'm finished with this one.

Talking Up Talking Tolkien

Reading Tolkien along with this group of smart and funny fellow-enthusiasts is a great project. They are knowledgeable but not intimidating. Even though I already "know" Tolkien pretty well, I have enjoyed these book club style conversations. There is always a new insight or observation to think about. Join in!
