I didn't start listening until after 7 episodes were available and I binge-listened to all of them within two days. I love all of the different perspectives Cristen brings in--midwife, doula, consumers, advocates, attorney, obstetrician,...--that gives a well-rounded view of the importance of birth options, the need for respect in maternity care, and the necessity for everyone to understand and protect women's and families' rights in childbirth.

Real topics, in real need of attention

Cristen meticulously covers the topics that women face in todays maternity care, shining a much needed light on the issues that often overlooked and ignored.

As a doula, labor & delivery nurse, future nurse-midwife, and someone who has followed Cristen's work with Improving Birth and Birth Monopoly for a while now, I consider myself very passionate and knowledgeable on the subject of the poor state of maternity care in the U.S. and the epidemic of obstetric violence. But even I was blown away by how deep and engaging the discussion was between Cristen and her guests, dealing with issues such as racism and misogyny, which are just as systemically ingrained in maternity care as they are in the rest of our society. I love how they are not afraid to use appropriate terms to name things for what they are; you will hear words like "abuse," "violence," "sexual assault," "battery," and "injustice," to describe the forced interventions imposed on birthing people. You will hear mothers and doulas give testimony to the abuses that they have experienced. And on the positive side, you will hear a doctor describe how she puts her patients in charge of the decision-making and has seen improved outcomes in her practice because of it. But you will learn that this is the exception, not the norm in modern obstetric care and that is why it is so, so important for EVERYONE to listen to this--most people don't become aware of what the reality of giving birth in America is until they have a horrible experience first-hand. It doesn't have to be this way. Just listen.
