Too many errors and too many tangents
This podcast would be really good if they spent more time staying on topic. The hosts spend too much time chatting about anything in the beginning of the episodes and in a few other places, meaning that they don't actually start discussing the topic of the podcast until more than five minutes in. Most annoying was on the Season 3 podcast when they spent far too much time discussing Power Rangers Samurai at length before ever beginning discussion of MMPR Season 3. If the podcast episode was about Samurai, that would be fine, but when it's advertised as an episode about MMPR, I expect for the discussion to center around MMPR.
Additionally, the commentary seems to be riddled with errors. While I admit I know the "Zordon era" seasons possibly a little too well, it becomes amazingly annoying when the hosts make mistakes, such as discussing Rito Revolto and Master Vile as Season 2 villains, when both were not introduced until Season 3. In addition, the hosts seem to be unable to draw the distinction between sentai footage that was adapted for Power Rangers vs. original footage that was made specifically for Power Rangers. Thus the criticisms leveled at the show for elements that originated in sentai footage seem unfair when Saban had no control over its creation.
Also, volume levels are inconsistent throughout the podcast. The music is often at a very different level (both higher and lower) than the voice tracks, which leads to the need to adjust the volume very quickly for fear of blowing out one's ears.
All in all, this podcast has the potential to be great, but there's a lot of fluff in it that needs to get pulled out, the hosts need to study their Power Rangers more carefully and better understand the distinction between sentai and original footage, and the production values need to increase.
Good for what it is
Easily the best PR podcast on itunes, the only problem being that isn't saying much. I end up liking more of the back and forth between the podcasters when they are NOT talking about the subject or anything to do with Spada.
I find with the three of them in some episodes things flow a lot better and there is more to discuss since until recently the other two have had similar views on everything and didn't see the sentai so it relied too much on the listener having seen every episode of that season to understand.
Some early episodes because of the lack of a third member in the conversation will come off slow or going on for too long. However if you power through it or just start with Disney era discussions, maybe Time Force if you wanna start the eariliest, you will find that the show improves into something you may look forward to new releases of.
I will say however I have not listened to the interviews so they may be far better than the pre-Time Force posts but I guess if this review helped it is for you to decide.
One of the hosts is ok but the other. Wow. The single worst podcaster I've ever heard. He comes off incredibely amatureish yet he says he does 50 podcasts. That's just scary. He's not funny. But he makes unfunny jokes CONSTANTLY. You can tell the other host thinks they aren't funny because most the the time he doesn't laugh at them then there's an awkward silence and then the host laughing at his own joke. Almost every joke works this way. Even when he did a joke with the opening song which in and of it self was fine but then he had to go out of his way to say he did a joke which just made it unfunny. Also his laugh is really annoying I understand that's not something he can control but when it constantly comes after his own unfunny jokes it's just irratating.
Now that's not the biggest problem. The biggest nails against chalkboard I want to scream at my mp3 player problem is how bad he is at critical thinking. I almost feel bad for him because he clearly doesn't have any idea what critical thinking or analyzing is. The best example I can come up with is he nit picked a minor logic jump in the MMPR movie and when the other host told him he was just nitpicking he replied by saying he was just looking at it with a critical eye. No. Looking at it with a critical eyewould be adressing the fact that no one in the entire film has a character arc or that the villain lacks a motivation or that the great power is both all powerful and at the same time seems to do nothing. The fact that he thinks a small nit pick is critically analyzing is quite frankly insulting. This persists through out the entire show that he brings up minor inconsistancies and says he's being critical but ignores actual problems.
Also when the host discuses the series he just reads the wikipedia entry. He couldn't even bother to take notes on the show he's supposed ot be reviewing. And it's not liek he just had wikipedia up for a quick refference he just reads wikipedia verbatum and often says he doesn't even remember the thing he's reading about.
I listened to this because there aren't really any other podcasts going throught the power rangers series. Sadly this elemetery level podcast is the only thing there is. I shudder to think what the host's 50 other podcasts sound like. You'd think 50 in he'd have gained some level of maturity or professionalism.
