||CleanIt’s a Trap!||Like what is the purpose of the church why are we doing the things that we do why are we doing all these activities as a church we have a mission statement and I'm just going to randomly call in one of you to see if you know it now I'm here I'm kidding i would. Never forgive me if I did that but our mission statement of the tour yeah it's in the bullets and you just have to look at The Bolton but our church we exist to develop committed followers of Jesus Christ through the teaching and encouragement of God's word that's why we exist we want to see people become more like Jesus Christ and to truly be committed to being followers of Christ and over the last couple of years what we've done is we've talked about the values that we have as a church we have four main values the first in this is kind of in in order of priority is Bible center teaching and preaching if nothing else we are a church that honestly believes that God wrote this and so every week could you come here hopefully you either learn something new or are reminded of something that God said and so we are a church to prayer in values Bible center teaching preaching we're also a church that values discipleship we believe in the discipleship process discipleship the simply the older generation investing in the next generation bringing them up to be leaders so that they can pass on the teachings of God to the next generation after that so that's two of our values the third value is faithful service and we believe that God is given to everyone within the Body of Christ the gift that they should use to help build up the body and our fourth value is what we're going to be talking about this fall the next several weeks and that is healthy relationships we are a church that believes in healthy relationships and that means that our relationships with each other all the relationship dynamics that we have in this world they should be as God intended them to be. A way to describe relationships the way God intended them to be they should be positive and encouraging. Kind of like the radio station K. love all you're probably thinking that they should also be based on grace and truth you have to have both in your relationships not just one or the other also healthy relationships mean that we should never compromise God's standards because in some relationships there's compromises and people will bring in their own fleshly desires and influences and it will ruin and distort the kind of relationship that God wants us down with each other so we're going to spend the next several weeks focusing on healthy relationships and we're also going to focus on some of the one another commands in the Bible I've never had a series like that some kind of looking forward to that but first what I want to do today is kind of look at the bad side of human relationships or release what satan is trying to do is what I want to do today is recognize that our enemy satan is focused on destroying relationships if you have a healthy relationship with another human being whether it's your spouse friend parent sibling God [misspoke "Satan"] wants to destroy that and so what I'm going to do today I want to do two simple things today I want to identify a specific trap of Satan and then I also want to understand why that specific trap is so effective Well let's talk about the track. I'm I'm multitasking today I'm actually doing my own slide so let's see we'll see how this goes what is the trap that we're going to be talking about for the next few weeks there's there are some common traps that are out there in the world many of you know what they are I always find this one I don't live in a clock whenever I go to Costco you know the samples the food samples are definitely a trap some of us really like those traps this last Monday the kids and I this is the last day before they went to school so we wanted to||8/12/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||CleanNo Boasting in Heaven!||All right as they're making their way out I'm going to before we get into the message for today I want to give you an update on our board retreat yesterday we had our annual board retreat and what we usually do it's some Typically it's been like in August before before September and what will do is on Thursday will ever were seen as everyone gets out of work we'll meet at somebody's house and then we'll drive up north we've gone two months park before we usually go up to a cabin up by Lake Forest I think somewhere in the forest like I got there I got the words right just in the wrong order and we'll have a great time will be up there Thursday and then all day Friday and then Saturday will finish up in the will come back down well yesterday our board retreat we didn't have as nearly as much talked about yesterday as we have in the past and so all day yesterday Saturday we met in the house here at the church kind of save some time and money but what we started off by doing is just remembering what last year's board retreat was like it's already been a year sense we decided to buy this building so we kind of recap this so I want to recap this is well for you so these are the events that took place last year two thousand and seventeen it was on Wednesday July seventeenth that four of us met with our next door neighbor on union Hills Dave Cole and we said hey we're interested let's pursue purchasing the house next door your house and he said yeah that's great let's do that let's try to figure it out see if you can purchase the house and then we renovate it to take the backyard make it into a parking lot or whatever we're going to do and so that was on Wednesday night July twenty seventh and then that Bennett had insomnia that night or something because he went online and he was just kind of curious to see what else is out there before we buy our next door neighbor's house and so when I woke up the first thing I did is they checked my e-mail and there was a link from out Bennett saying hey check this out this this looks pretty cool and I responded by saying to Matt thanks for ruining my day. Because I knew I would be looking at this all day. And just that day it's like wow this this option might be a lot better than buying next for a neighbor's house and renovating it so the staff we had a staff meeting that night we let them air all over and look at the video. Pictures on line and we said this is something that we really need to pursue and so last year on Tuesday August first the staff came through and we took a look at this facility and we said yeah let's let's really consider this the next Tuesday August eighth the board came through and we toured the church and then that was on a Tuesday that Thursday we left for our border treat and the entire border retreat was talking we were talking about should we pursue this is this something that we want to pursue as a first option as opposed to our next door neighbor's house on union hills and that border retreat was it was intense it was it was in such a cool way because the board was unanimous thinking this is a better option let's pursue this but then we were also thinking but but we'll only pursue it if and so we're making these deals with God A guy will only do this if if they accept our offer because we were going to offer less than they were asking that's just how the world works and we said we only do this if we sell our church we have to sell or church first and the church has to accept this and vote to move forward and so all this was happening a year ago and so after the board treat on that Sunday we said this we were going to do we toured the church and then on Sunday September tenth we had a vote as a church to move forward and it passed and so we were just waiting on God so that was a year ago a year ago it isn't it amazing how fast time has gone and so here we are one ye||8/5/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||CleanSowing and Reaping||I thought he wanted to preach. Well can you believe it's you we're in the dead of summer summer it's not going to get cooler anytime soon but not this week would you guys know that next week school begins. And all of the parents said Amen I can have mixed emotions about that it seems like you get the summer break and it goes by so fast but the good thing about school starting is that football season starts very soon too that's right that's right and I twenty seven days to be exact but who's counting on you know someone told me that but I don't know about you but this summer has been good I always look forward to summer because we get a little break usually on some big trip and then camps always a great week especially for the kids the kids love camp I think they're already looking forward to next year but a couple years ago we had kind of a different summer we didn't do what we normally do we didn't go back to Michigan in the summer of two thousand and sixteen our fellowship of churches the grace gospel fellowship we had a family Bible conference up in my church that I grew up in in Spokane Washington and they asked me to be one of the speakers and so so OK kids we're not going to miss you this year we're going to go up to Washington and that summer was a great trip we drove all the way up the California coast the organ coast right by the ocean that was phenomenal I cannot wait to do that again but I want to go north to south and sort of south to north this is kind of a side bar. Going up there so many times you're like oh I want to pull over and watch something but if you're going north you can't because the ocean's on the left side so anyway so if you want to take that trip ghosts of north or south I think it's better that way but when we were back in Spokane it was great to see where I grew up and for those of you who have gone back to where you grew up Doesn't that seem like so small it's just so tiny Spokane when I was growing up was this huge city and now it's just so tiny we got everywhere driving in a car so fast you guys all remember your address in your first. Phone number from where you grew up one four four two zero you see think that ave Verda Washington nine zero three seven five one nine one three two three zero one that's in there forever that's not going anywhere but I can remember my last address but anyway that's that's another story but as we're driving around and I'm showing my kids the house that I grew up in and the neighborhood in and out of the restaurants that I worked at growing up it made me realize that my children's childhood is much different than my childhood was in many different ways some obvious ways today they're growing up with technology that you know most of us I'm looking at most of you most of us didn't have growing up in our childhood and a lot of the technology is great it's wonderful some of it maybe not so much so so good also the social issues that we're dealing with today are much different then when I was a kid things were much more simple back then also general safety is much different today than it was back then it was nothing for me to tell my mom hey mom I'm driving my bike down to the bowling alley or to the mall I'll be back later and she'd be OK be back before dinner and when you think twice about it our kids tell us are going somewhere like wait a second where you go in let's check both ways on the street you know we're kind of very conservative very concerned about their kids these days but the biggest difference between my kids childhood and my childhood is definitely the climate Spokane's a little different than Phoenix Arizona. When I grew up we had a nice house it was almost as little bit more than a half acre lot not quite a full acre and the first third of the lot was the House and the second third of the lot was a big grass backyard it was great all the neighbor||7/29/2018||Free||View in iTunes|

||CleanWhose Glory Is It Anyway?||God has given me. Two things back to back to lighten the mood before I get up here and talk last week my father butchered a song that he sung one hundred times and this week one of my sons had his hands firmly placed right down the front of his pants while games trying to. Shall we. Who taught that parenting class last semester. Let's pray Heavenly Father. Said that you be with us in this time. I have no interest in saying the words of my own agenda but the words that you've given me speak to us through your word and through your awesome creation we pray the scenes in your son's name Amen. So this is week two I'm ready for Josh to be back and I'm ready for Josh to be back it was it's been honor and a humbling experience to prepare to sermons for the congregation that I love the last two weeks. But I'm ready for him to be back. Last week we got a chance to focus on our tendency to pass out blame how since creation we've. Pointed the rugged finger of blame at others even to God or creator. Even when sometimes the blame really is just a byproduct of how creation works and hopefully through our discussion last week you took away a few new perspectives on how to be avoided blaming God for certain situations or circumstances that you find yourself in maybe you got yourself in first that God is completely sovereign. There is nothing that happens that is not totally and completely part of his ordained will. And second that test will come God uses those tests and sometimes even gives you those tests in order to refine us he removes impurities through the tests. And he shapes us to the person that he wants us to be and then finally that we are responsible we have a responsibility we have a response ability the ability to respond and to control our reactions to the circumstances we find ourselves in and that God while He may test you never does tempt you we read that from from James so this week we're moving on from our tendency to pass out blame We're going to discuss our tendency to hold on to glory. And see to hold on to glory that is not ours and this is a much different approach when the addressing this in our lives it's not as much of what we ought not to do but what we ought to do sometimes it's easier to sit and listen to things about all we shouldn't do that anymore and kind of eradicate that but when we have to talk about stuff that we ought to do and you have to start planning in prepping and actually change habits in order to act according to what God calls us to do it's a different approach I want to start with reading in dissecting this verse from Romans it didn't fall out of my pocket this week at and see if we've got it here Romans Chapter five six three you can read along in your bible your phone up on the screen Romans five six through eight you see just at the right time when we were still powerless Christ died for the. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die But God demonstrates His own love for us in this while we were still sinners Christ died for us and I point out this verse because this verse is talking about grace not worthiness we are loved by God and He showed that in the most perfect and profound way we are loved by God but we are not worthy of God's love that's why it's called Grace because when it was not deserved We got it anyway and so we're going to start this discussion thinking about how we are not to hold on the glory we've got to first realize that we're not holding onto any worthiness that we may feel we should hold on the worthiness that we feel but we hold on to the grace that we feel through God's love. When we're talking about giving God glory or bringing God glory I know that can be intimidating sometimes seems like seems like such a high calling task that we could easily fail or do it wrong we don't want people||7/8/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||CleanPassing Out Blame||And I hope is. That so that one goes back. Actually really grateful for that really grateful for that slip Pop I was actually pretty nervous about today and that that kind of lightened the mood for me but it's also. Probably more appropriate the words that we saying at least for me it was a small. That we stand on the solid rock foundation of of crisis price Morning Glory love you we thank you for bringing us here together this morning thank you for your word and experiences in our lives that draws near to that word just pray for the words you laid on my heart this morning and I say what you want me to say that of my own desires and just be with this rest of today your son's name Amen I like to first pose a couple questions ask ask two questions of you and the answer to these questions can be kind of depressing to think about so I'll first preface it with this world will pretend that I'm asking these questions of just America in general not that way we can pretend we're not talking about anyone specific in this room or maybe our own selves so the first question that is somewhat depressing to try and answer do you think we have and really think about this do you think we have a bigger entitle Mint problem or a lack of responsibility problem. A bigger entitle a problem or a lack of responsibility problem and if you work with or you know and you want to deal with customers ages twenty to ninety four how do you need to be ninety four OK so then you know if you've ever dealt with people in that age group that question whether or not we have a bigger entitle me a problem or a lack of responsibility a problem is not subject to just teenagers right Stood Still much more than that second question is this. Do you do you think we suffer more from a condition of pride or a vanity. And tough question and kind of depressing to think about I am humbled I'm nervous exciting I'm sweating a little bit the fact that I'm here in front of you preaching I've never been ill I've never been asked to or been honored to have two weeks in a row where Josh is gone I get to do that so we're going to do a two week mini series and we're going to be discussing you're focusing on how we have this tendency to pass out blame yet hold on to glory our kneejerk reaction to pass out blame but yet hold on to glory. Speaking of entitlement responsibility as we're going to focusing on this week whether our our tendency to pass out blame I found a few quotes for you and they're not meant to be funny per se but when speaking out against entitlement or quotes against the title meant you really can't approach it any other way than sarcasm so we're not meant to necessarily be funny maybe you know some of these people first quote you have to do your own growing no matter how tall your grandfather was. That's Abraham Lincoln an American author he wrote this quote I found I spend my life constantly calling in imaginary debts that aren't owed to me in order that I can avoid a real debts that I owe to others and thus everyone ends up bankrupt. Margaret Thatcher who was the only female. Prime Minister of the United Kingdom this is entitlements not necessarily entitlement but she wrote The problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other people's money. And if you cause about responsibility the reason people blame place blame on previous generations. Because there's really only one other option. And this one here about responsibility I'll let you guess to know if if you know who wrote this quote we must reject the idea that every time a laws broken society is guilty rather than the law breaker it's time we restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions but you know who that was. Thrown of Reagan from Ray I like that guy when I was old enough to remember his presidency. Sorry everyone else ever want to tell you a story o||7/1/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||CleanHow to Love the Jerks and the Dufuses||Want to make sure that we plug Sunday school classes which change Sunday school classes next month starts new classes will have. Matt Brady you're in the House is that correct and then I think Ed Swanson is in here I don't know what the classes are but I know they'll be good so it's a good time if you've not been coming to Sunday school to get in at the beginning of the class you know have to worry about I'm not quite up to speed but it's really a good chance to in a conversational setting kind of explore the Bible this is not conversational I will be talking at you you're not allowed talking back to me but Sunday school is really a good opportunity to have that experience where you learn through questions and answers and other people's perspectives to give that a try next week this morning we're going to talk. About. People are just jerks. And I'm done. You know you go to a church softball game and you think you can trust a guy and he throws a grapefruit out your. The world I've bought I'm I'm of the opinion that the world would really be a better place if it weren't for people. I got out of retail because I liked working in retail but I could not stand the customers and they said you're probably not a good fit for retail if you don't get along with the people that pay us to be here. But there are people that are struggles to deal with do you do you know a jerk I mean just somebody that is selfish and it doesn't matter what it is they're going to find a way to make it about them or to ruin it because they didn't come up with the idea. You know maybe it's Thanksgiving dinner Chris Christmas time you've got that family member that no matter what the plan is they've got to ruin it because for some reason it doesn't work for them specifically Never mind it works for everybody else it doesn't work for them specifically or somebody it work. Hoo ha you've got a project and things are moving along but because it's your project they're going to do what they can to pump the brakes on it they're just going to cause you grief throughout the whole process. They're there are jerks there are some people who messed things up but not because they're bad people just because they weren't paying attention or the too busy worrying about the little stuff to miss the big picture. I try to come up with some examples and boy is a pair of toddlers It was so hard for me to come up with an example of somebody that is so worried about details they just don't trust you. It has been two Sundays now I think I've I've managed to come to church without the question of why are we taking your car and not mom's car but that's because my wife and kids are back in Michigan and I've been coming to church by myself. Every Sunday ever taken mom's car not your car how come we're taking your car not mom's car in forty three years on this planet I have earned the right to decide which car I'm going to take the church and I appreciate that you just want to know the decision making process behind it because we just get in the van and go to church. There are always always questions and it's not like they're trying to sabotage the process right they just want to know they want to know why why. Maybe you have somebody who struggles with seeing the forest through the trees gets so caught up in the details that they miss what it is you're about to take part in. We're going to look at the sporting how how Jesus dealt with those people and what work. You're supposed to have a theme in your sermon the title of your sermon and and today it's going to be how to love the jerks in the doofus is. Real deep theological stuff that we're going to cut right into the heart of scripture. But it's important because the world is full of people and people make mistakes and some people are jerks and some people you know don't mean to cause problems but cause problems and Jesus had t||6/24/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||CleanJust Like Dad!||Well Father's Day. It's a big day in this country not nearly as big as Mother's Day Would you all agree with that mothers are like Yeah of course I had a conversation with someone who we are today that Mother's Day is a little promoted a little more and I think rightfully so mothers do a little bit more work than fathers typically But Father's Day is one of those those holidays where some of you. It might not be a good day for you whether it's because you did not have a good relationship with your father or you don't know your father or he's no longer here so Father's Day can be good for some and not so good for others but I hope for those of you that are here today that it is hopefully that it would be and that's also a day when all of us can maybe stop and reflect on how we are like our parents and because this is Father's Day specifically like our fathers I saw a picture of myself recently and the first thing I thought was hey what's my dad know that's me just kind of happens from time to time but now that I'm a father and I look at my kids and I know that they're growing up to be kind of like their parents in some way there are ways in which I hope they are like me and some ways that I hope that they're not like me they're the everyone can probably relate to that using one example and I know this isn't a very serious example but I'm a typical guy and I have a few sports teams that I like and so I want my kids to like the sports teams that I like right thing most dads are probably like that as well and then I also think there's ways in which I hope that they're not like me or at least I hope that they're better than me and parents and you kind of wish that for your kids you want them to be better than you at certain things like for instance a couple subjects that I wasn't the best at math when you go beyond just simple addition subtraction multiplication division when you get into an algebra trigonometry I never was really interested in that but I've always hoped that my kids would be better than me at math and I think the least two of them are. Going to be better than me and then even was spelling I'm not the best speller Teresa fog you will attest to that. And I really rely heavily on auto checker spell check and then I have one kid who won the spelling bee in the fourth grade of the entire school so we have at least one good speller but. You know Dad's today maybe as you're thinking about your kids you're thinking how are your kids like you and in what ways do you want them to be like you and maybe what ways do you not want them to be like you while this last week last Sunday we finished up on the fruit of the spirit and this is kind of ironic because the fruit of the Spirit is literally about our heavenly Father molding us and shaping us to be like him that's what the fruit of the Spirit is the Holy Spirit helping us become more like our Heavenly Father and this is what Paul's desire is for everyone that he wrote any letter to and he says this explicitly in the book of Galatians I want you to open your your Bibles to the book of Galatians right now go to Chapter five but first in chapter four Paul says this new kind of see is heart for the people of glacier He says My little children for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth and tell the Christ is formed in you and so this is what Paul wants to see happen in the lives of these people in Glacier he wants to see them be like Christ and become like their hope their Lord and Savior Well as we've gone through the fruit of the spirit you know I hope over these last several years several weeks that we've done these last nine weeks that all of us are really seriously considering this this very special work of God in our lives we're where we seriously consider each of these qualities of the fruit of the spirit and we ask yourself Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to have||6/17/2018||Free||View in iTunes|
||CleanSelf-Control||It's amazing to see those kids that they're just getting so fast so big so fast. Things are different today than when we were kids right it doesn't matter how old you are and here especially when it comes to watching television you remember how back in the day we didn't have you couldn't record everything and you couldn't just watch things online if you missed it when I was a kid if you want to watch a television show what you have to do and be in front of your T.V. ad that specific time well I prefer things today as opposed to the back when I was a kid but I remember there was something that they televised when I was a kid and I don't think they do it anymore they probably don't need to but how many of you remember watching the launching of the space shuttle that was such a big deal that they would televise it and I look out the audience today and I know many of you have probably seen the space shuttle being launched some of you may have not but as a kid and even today as an adult it's so impressive to see NASA be able to launch such a heavy object and how to go shooting out into outer space I want to I want to share with you how much power and energy is needed to make a successful launch of the space shuttle so I got the software NASA website or or wicked Pedia one of the DO is about the same thing on the space shuttle is launched in a vertical position with Thrust provided by two solid rocket boosters called the first stage and three space shuttle main engines called the second stage of lift off both the boosters and the main engines are operating and the three main engines together provide almost one point two million pounds of thrust and the two solid rocket boosters provide a total of six point six million pounds of thrust the total thrust it launch is about seven point eight million pounds and to achieve orbit the space shuttle must excel or it from zero to a speed of almost eighteen thousand miles an hour which is basically nine times faster than a bullet that comes out of. Rifle I mean just just imagine the space shuttle is huge it has to be going nine times as fast as a speeding bullet all right to travel that fast it must reach an altitude above most of us out of the sphere so that friction with the air will not slow it down or overheat it the journey starts at a relatively slow pace that lift off the shuttle weighs more than four point five million pounds with all the fuel everything and it takes eight seconds for the engines and boosters to accelerate the ship to one hundred miles an hour so zero to one hundred eight seconds faster than most cars but by the time the first minute has passed the shuttle is traveling at more than one thousand miles an hour and it has already consumed more than one and a half million pounds of fuel All right that's impressive to hear about it if you want to see it yeah it's on You Tube So let's watch. The launching of discovery this is the last time it was launched and we'll get this up in just a second and I picked this one because this is really cool you can see on the bottom right corner when it's up there it has thrust speed the mach the elevation so you can watch all of those numbers just Corp really really fast as the space shuttle is launching So three to one has been activated protection discovery and the launch pad from Trans the Boeing if you. Should go for main entrance shows. Start. One. And the final liftoff of Discovery but the case of hard work to find the. List. Every week.
