Gravy, a biweekly podcast, doesn’t profile star chefs. We don’t pander to cookbook authors. We don’t narrate recipes. Gravy tells stories of people and place through food. Gravy shares stories of the changing American South. Rooted in the work of the Southern Foodways Alliance, which has been documenting, studying, and celebrating the diverse food cultures of the region since 1999, Gravy brings smart Southern narratives to a national audience, revealing the region in all its complexity, telling true and sometimes difficult stories of Southern pasts and presents. Our focus is regional. But the reach of our stories is national. The South is the taproot of American cuisine. The region claims a unique place in American history and cultural imagination. The history hereabouts is complicated. So is the present. Gravy showcases a South that is constantly evolving, receiving immigrants from across the world, adopting new traditions and lovingly maintaining old ones. Gravy uses food to dig into the lesser-known corners of the region, complicate stereotypes, document new dynamics, and sing the unsung people who grow, cook, and serve our daily meals. At Gravy, what we eat is a window into who we are. Through that window, we glimpse how race, class, gender, faith, sexuality and environment play out in the region and across the nation. Gravy tells stories of farmers and food scientists. Of dishwashers and distillers. Gravy shares tales of banh mi and barbecue shrimp. Of your grandma’s potlikker and your neighbor’s arroz con pollo. Of the mariachis busking in the fried chicken café and the punk band head-banging in the vegan joint. Gravy serves up the South you know. Gravy dishes the South you don’t yet know and have longed to taste.

About much more than food

I loved the first episode of Gravy, which tells the story of the Lumbee Indians through the lens of southern food, or maybe it tells the story of southern food through the lens of the Lumbee Indians. It’s so well done, you just want to hear the story. Like the best of radio documentary, it’s sound-rich, nuanced, and intimate, and Tina Antolini is a smart, thoughtful narrator and creator. I look forward to finding out where she goes next with this….

A shout-out for the new Gravy podcast series launch, a Lumbee Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving from the Indians' perspective: a revelation of a whole "other" South than whatever your stereotype is... And (YUM!) a cornbread collard sandwich! Not your standard Thanksgiving fare!

Simply wonderful

A beautiful podcast, both in content and production quality. I'm from the south and often struggle with how I feel about southern culture due to the nasty history from which much of it was born. This podcast confronts that history, but allows you to relish in the beauty that was often born from hate. It's changed my perspective and has helped me gain a new appreciation for the south and its food! Start listening - you won't regret it!
