October 9, 2008 This program celebrates the colorful elegance of the Korean national dress, hanbok, which is enjoying a renaissance in large part thanks to designer Kim Hyesoon. Kim designs costumes for the wildly popular Korean television drama series “Hwang Jin Yi,” which celebrated the classic beauty of hanbok through the fictionalized story of Korea’s most illustrious 16th century female entertainer and artist (gisaeng). Kim’s original approach refreshed thehanbok with a subtle modern flair, while still maintaining the classic style. This program features a traditional Korean wedding ceremony with a real couple who will tie the knot during the program. The couple will also wear hanbok designed by Kim. This program was planned in coordination with the Korea Costume Science Foundation, Seoul, Korea and the Korean Art and Culture Committee of the Asian Art Museum. Funding generously provided by Korea Daily San Francisco, the Korea Foundation, and the Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
