Customer Reviews

Kudos to Kevin Stroud

Don't let the lack of star ratings deter you from listening to this podcast. Kevin Stroud has created one of the most informative and interesting history podcasts I've heard. His delivery is particularly good, with an excellent balance of a conversational style and and succinctness that shows he put the time and effort into developing his material for broadcast. Too often this is not the case, and the results are either a wooden delivery that sounds like the presenter is reading from a script, or something less formal that rambles without direction and purpose.

Engrossing

This is high quality linguistic nerdbait!

Best Podcast Ever?

I'm a total linguistics (especially historical linguistics) nerd, so this podcast is right up my alley. But even if you're not, if you give it a chance (at least a couple episodes), you might very well fall in love just like I did.

Kevin Stroud turns what could be a very complex, confusing, and potentially dull history of our language into something that is easy to understand and endlessly fascinating. Each chapter is crammed full of amazing facts about the origins and idiosyncrasies of English - why it's so convoluted and seemingly illogical, but beautiful in its own way. I honestly don't think I'll ever think of (or read or speak) my native tongue in the same way. I now feel so fortunate to be a native speaker of English. This podcast is a "backstage pass" to the workings and history of English, and I promise you'll be amazed like I was at what you'll learn about a language you *thought* you knew well...
