|8||VideoOne Ring Circus: On Collecting Unlikely Photographs||BFA Photography and Video, in conjunction with Swann Auction Galleries and the International Center for Photography’s exhibition, “Hunt’s Three Ring Circus: American Groups Before 1950,” presents a panel discussion between collectors W.M. Hunt, Daile Kaplan and Josh Sapan. W.M. Hunt is a collector, curator and consultant whose exhibition, “Hunt’s Three Ring Circus: American Groups Before 1950,” is currently being presented in conjunction with the International Center for Photography at the 1285 Avenue of the Americas Gallery through January 2016. His book, The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious (Aperture), was published in 2011. Daile Kaplan is Photographs Specialist on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow and vice president and director of photographs at Swann Auction Galleries. Her collection of three-dimensional decorative and functional objects embellished with photographs, which she named "pop photographica," has been exhibited at the Museum of Art and Design, the Morgan Museum and Library, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Les Rencontres d'Arles, in France. Josh Sapan is the President and CEO of AMC Networks, the company that operates the cable channels AMC, BBC AMERICA, IFC, WE tv and SundanceTV. The channels, movies, documentaries and series created under his guidance have won multiple awards including Emmys, Golden Globes, Oscars and Peabodys. Sapan serves on the board of trustees of People For The American Way and the Museum of the Moving Image. He is a highly idiosyncratic collector and his photography book, The Big Picture: America in Panorama, with an introduction by Luc Sante, was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2013.||12/16/2015||Free||View in iTunes|

Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography and Howard Chapnick Grant for the Advancement of Photojournalism. The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented annually to photographers whose work is judged by a panel of experts in the compassionate tradition of photojournalist W. Eugene Smith. The program includes presentations of photo essays by this year’s grant and fellowship recipients and finalists, a unique tribute to the work of W. Eugene Smith and a special keynote speech. The W. Andrew Moore and Philip Levine
The first time I heard the term Ruin Porn was through this lecture. Perhaps I live in an artistic backwater. I am still coming to grips with the definition of the term and trying to decide whether it is a fad, a derogatory classification, or both.
Moore's Detroit Dissembled has earned him praise and scorn. While I enjoyed his discussion of the work, what intrigued me more was what was exposed peripherally about the nature of documentary style photography - particularly when it is a single subject. It can lead to considerable admonishment, especially when the photographer is viewed as an outsider.
Moore is not the first photographer, and certainly will not be the last, to be shunned for this style of work. Photographs by Dorothea Lange and some of the other photographers employed by the Resettlement and Farm Security Administrations during the Great Depression came under similar criticism. The act of documentary, whether it be artistic or photo journalistic, is not without consequence. Arturo Perez-Reverte's "The Painter of Battles" is an excellent fictional treatment of this.
I found it interesting to compare Moore's work with that of Camilo Jose Vergara in the "Sense of Place" series by MIT.
