Andrew Moore and Philip Levine

The first time I heard the term Ruin Porn was through this lecture. Perhaps I live in an artistic backwater. I am still coming to grips with the definition of the term and trying to decide whether it is a fad, a derogatory classification, or both.

Moore's Detroit Dissembled has earned him praise and scorn. While I enjoyed his discussion of the work, what intrigued me more was what was exposed peripherally about the nature of documentary style photography - particularly when it is a single subject. It can lead to considerable admonishment, especially when the photographer is viewed as an outsider.

Moore is not the first photographer, and certainly will not be the last, to be shunned for this style of work. Photographs by Dorothea Lange and some of the other photographers employed by the Resettlement and Farm Security Administrations during the Great Depression came under similar criticism. The act of documentary, whether it be artistic or photo journalistic, is not without consequence. Arturo Perez-Reverte's "The Painter of Battles" is an excellent fictional treatment of this.

I found it interesting to compare Moore's work with that of Camilo Jose Vergara in the "Sense of Place" series by MIT.
