Yayoi Ikawa, Color of Dreams, Jazz, 2005

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of listening to an album originally released in 2005, by an amazing jazz pianist, Ms. Yayoi Ikawa, titled, Color of Dreams.

I listened again today like a kid with a new toy. Now I'm writing of my musical adventures. It is apparent that her music in this album has weaved into its dreamy melodic themes, her subtle expressions of what colors sound like in her musical dreams.

The album has nine selections:
1. Ler Horizon
2. Songbird and Soul Dance
3. Leaving
4. Color of Dreams
5. Chelsea Bridge
6. Night Glider
7. Lullaby
8. Morning Rage
9. Motherland

Often I hear chords with a similar dissonance however, the real artistry is the splendor of the progression, of how the first sound you hear continues to ring in your ears, yet the distance traveled in a moments notice can seem like millions of light years away.
Sometimes in the future, sometimes in the past, sometimes slow, sometimes fast...yet the melody remains locked in a dream with the chords.

The rhythmic syncopation of the bass lines sits below the melody like a soft pillow that plots a magical course of where your head often falls, while the lightly sprinkling of snare drums, Tom-toms, cymbals and crashes, lighting fills...beginning and starting and pausing and suspending and building and bridging and stopping and ending until you awake and wonder, how did I get to this place...

I now find myself asking, what is the color of dreams? Answer: Every color you can imagine. We all have dreams, teach your children, exhort your friends, believe in yourself, dreams are so many beautiful colors.

Yayoi, thanks for your inspiring music.
