Description

My Comic Shop History is a podcast hosted by filmmaker Anthony Desiato (My Comic Shop DocumentARy, By Spoon!, Wacky Man, and the upcoming My Comic Shop Country) exploring the business, culture, and fandom of the comics retail industry. In Season 1, a comic book store fell, a community united, and a podcast was born. Each subsequent season of the podcast, currently in its fourth cycle, has tackled a distinct part of the comics industry, including collecting (Season 2), national comics retail (Season 3), and comic conventions (Season 4). The podcast also includes the subseries Beyond My Comic Shop (featuring stories in and around the comic book world) and My Comic Shop Book Club (discussions of classic favorites and current hits).

The Comic Book Shop Version of "Cheers" in a great way

There's no Comic shop quite like Alternate Realities, and this podcast shows it. It's a close-knit community filled with really great guys, and this podcast explores the depths of various customer histories, as well as the history of people who've worked there or still work there. It's really fun, and you can get a sense of how these people truly feel about this story and it's owner. It's a one of a kind podcast, and if you've ever enjoyed comic books or a sense of camaraderie, this is your spot. Cheers to Desi Westside and all those involved in the making of this podcast.

Entertaining and informative

This show answers a lot of questions about the culture of comic books and the shops they are purchased from. Listening to each episode gives an understanding of the comradery in a pub like atmosphere, the business of running a store, dealing with distribution and even the views of people outside the culture looking in.

It’s About Community, Not Just Comics

Referred here by the illustrious Acmecast (Acme Comics’ podcast), and binged the twelve episodes as quickly as I could. Anthony Desiato and the Alternative Realities’ community put together an inter-mortem on the closing of a comic book shop from multiple aspects: business, customer, employee, family. The arc of the episodes is phenomenal - starting with the anger of owner Steve Oto and ending with in-the-moment self-realization and true emotion. The podcast participants literally move through the stages of grief during the 12 episodes as they question their community, its purpose, its leader, and what the loss of their “third space” will mean to those relationships.
