Great, But Too Short at Times
How could you go wrong with the best NPR story of the day? Well, you can't. However, if you are listening on a iPod, some episodes can be too short. NPR is great, but when chopped up into segments, it is hard to listen to in the car or on a walk. I have to keep fishing out my iPod to switch to the next story! If you subscribe to the “Most Emailed Stories” NPR feed instead, you’ll always get this “Story of the Day,” but you also wont have to put up with 4-minute podcasts some days.
Make "Story of the Day" into a Playlist
I tend to listen to this podcast after I've accumulated a bunch, like some of the reviewers below. I also had the problem of having to keep hitting play whenever the short story was over. But, if you save them up and put them into a playlist, this problem is solved due to the nature of playlists. And, as someone already pointed out, you can burn them to a CD if you want to archive them. This, for me, solved the one complaint I had about this wonderful podcast. Oh, and regarding the commercial: I will gladly accept one measely commercial at the beginning of a podcast (where you can easily fast forward since it's always the same length and at the same spot) to keep something free.
Another Solution to Short Programs
I also discovered that you can go directly to the NPR site and subscribe (in iTunes) to "The Most Emailed Stories of the Day". This is about a 35-45 minute program of all the best on NPR for each day. It is a great commute podcast!!
