Office Baggage is a podcast that “unpacks” the week of two successful corporate women. Hosted by Rae Parent and Marcy Twete, Office Baggage tackles topics that are all too often brushed under the office rug. Unafraid to take on the taboo, Marcy and Rae discuss their most frustrating moments on the corporate ladder and the topics professionals want to discuss to get ahead, understand the corporate construct and start climbing the ladder instead of holding onto a rung for dear life. Our resident Millennial, Marcy is a “recovered entrepreneur” turned corporate responsibility and sustainability leader for one of the largest manufacturing companies in the world. Gen X-er Rae is an executive at a Fortune 100 Financial Services Company and brings to the table 20 years of experience in the corporate sector, most of them happy. Rae and Marcy met in Kellogg’s Executive MBA program and bonded over sarcasm and raw ambition. Originally titled “The Fat Chick and the Token Jew,” this podcast is about business – seriously, it is!

    57. Cultivating a Rest Ethic and Taking Time Off with Author John Fitch

Our society is obsessed with work ethic, but at the same time overworked, under rested, and seems to always feel a bit frazzled. Especially in this time of a global pandemic, our work lives and home lives are less separated than ever before, and it’s harder to truly find “time off.” John Fitch’s book tackles just that subject – how we, as individuals and as a society, can cultivate a “rest ethic” and spur creativity like never before. This isn’t just another time management book, it’s truly a new way of living.

Our Guest Today: John Fitch, Co-Author, Time Off

John Fitch is a business coach, angel investor, and writer. He is a recovering workaholic who wrote Time Off for a former version of himself. John studied Business and Media at The University of Texas at Austin. He has built a career designing digital products and as an active angel investor in technologies that are automating the mundane work that most people don’t enjoy. He cares deeply about the future of work and is optimistic that everyone has the opportunity to join the creative class in the near future. He cultivates great ideas and inspiration by hosting a dinner party, training Jiu-Jitsu, farming watermelons, playing music, and dancing.

    56. Financial Building Blocks All Women Need

    56. Financial Building Blocks All Women Need

Joined today by Jessica Merino from Merino Wealth, we’re continuing the conversation on women, money and the building blocks we all need to build financial independence and long-term success. From negotiation to charitable giving, from choosing ESG funds to taking risks, Jessica covers the finance topics you need to consider in your life today.

Our Guest Today: Jessica Merino, CIMA®, CFP®, President and Founder, Merino Wealth

Jessica’s interest in finances started back when she was about 9 years old, long before she knew what financial planning was. For birthdays, she passed up the usual doll and board game requests and instead asked for shares of stock, as she was fascinated with the stock market. While in high school, she began investing her own money after receiving 1 share of Walmart stock from her grandparents. This led her to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Investments, & Banking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She took a position as a financial advisor at a large firm where she worked for 11 years before starting Merino Wealth in 2016.

Jessica has helped clients in all walks of life and has built up a specialty working with high income earning female service professionals like attorneys, consultants, and women in tech who are in their 30s and 40s. She understands their challenges so her goal is to help them feel more confident and less stressed as they pursue their financial goals. Jessica loves her work and is passionate about helping women work towards financial equality.

Jessica’s a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, providing financial planning services as a “fiduciary”—acting in the best interest of her financial planning clients. She was also awarded as 2019’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Chicago Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners. She also received the Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA) certification through the Investments & Wealth Institute™. Since only 17% of financial advisors are women Jessica’s also passionate about mentoring and collaborating with other female financial advisors.

In her free time, Jessica volunteers with Step Up, mentoring young women in under-resourced communities. She’s also a member of the Chicago Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, the Professional Women’s Club of Chicago, TIC’s Women Advisor Group, and the Fairway Network.  Jessica lives on the Near North Side of Chicago with her wonderful husband Mike and their adorable dog Finnegan.

Loved Marcy's insightful questions

Marcy Twete does her homework on her guests, and goes deep with them. It was a pleasure and an honor to chat with her on offline dating and human connection issues - and, more importantly, solutions you can instantly and easily apply in your own life.

Filling a Significant Void in the Podcast Market – with Humor and Empathy!

As a young woman just entering the corporate world (starting in a role where women make up only 30% of my peers!), I have been feeling out-of-place and anxious about navigating my male-dominated workspace. After scouring the internet for advice, I was thrilled to come across this podcast. I love how Marcy and Rae incorporate both high-level women's issues that are broadly being discussed today, like the Me Too movement, as well as smaller-scale issues/incidents that women encounter in the workplace everyday, like constantly being interrupted by men, that don't get as much attention in the media (side note: does anyone feel like some men have been conditioned to talk AT women, rather than WITH them?). I sincerely hope Marcy and Rae continue to air more episodes of "Office Baggage," because I have been really enjoying this podcast, and I haven't seen any other podcasters tackling the same important women-in-the-workplace issues with humor, self-awareness, and understanding!
