Description

Offshore, from Honolulu Civil Beat, is a new immersive storytelling podcast about a Hawaii most tourists never see. In Season 1, “A Killing in Waikiki,” Offshore investigates the violent deaths of two young Native Hawaiians — one in 1932, the other in 2011. The 10-episode series explores issues of race, federal power and policing in America’s most diverse state. If Hawaii can’t figure it out, what hope is there for the rest of America? The answer might surprise you.

Riveting

I've been to Hawaii many times and always knew there was so much more there than what you see when you're on vacation. This podcast has totally opened my eyes. I recommend Offshore to anyone who loves great stories — whether you're a local, a tourist or just someone trying to better understand life in America right now.

Awesome podcast

Super interesting and relevant

New View of Hawaii

When most people think of Hawaii, they think "paradise": tropical beaches for swimming, lush rainforests and luaus. Jessica Terrell provides a view of a different type of Hawaii. A Hawaii with political unrest, racial tensions and problems just like every where else in the United States. As Jessica guides you through one of the main focuses, a murder investigation from 2011, it becomes clear that their problems are the same problems facing the rest of the nation and that "paradise' may not be all it's cracked up to be. This podcast provides a fascinating insight into what life in Hawaii is really like, beyond it's hotels and beaches. It is a more real version of Hawaii that most people wouldn't know of and may not bother to go looking for. Can't wait to hear more in episode 2!
