Special Education (SPED) is NOT special for the vast majority of the almost 6 million students with disabilities who receive special education and related services in SU Schools. Reducing inappropriate referrals to special eduction is part of what must be done to reinvent SPED. Improving outcomes and results for Students with Disabilities (SWDs) who receive special education must also be part of transforming SPED. Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI) has been embrace by State Departments and school districts across the country. RTI is transforming schools and reinventing education by focusing on teaching and learning. Dr. Pasternack discusses these efforts as well as offering specific examples of what works.
