Tony Gentilcore on Gym Ownership, Evolving Your Coaching, and the Value of Consistent Training

Tony Gentilcore has done a few things in our industry.

He’s a prolific writer, traveled the globe to speak, and was one of the co-founders of Cressey Sports Performance and worked there as a coach from 2007-2015.

And his newest venture includes opening The Core Collective, where his goal is to bring trainers, coaches and physical therapists all under one roof to help better serve their clients and athletes.

In this show, Tony and I talk about the power of consistent training, how his philosophy has changed over the years, and why after years of reluctance, he finally decided to become a gym owner.

We had a few technical difficulties throughout the show, so apologies because the audio is a bit suspect. We did our best to clean it up and I hope you still enjoy the show!

Now my clients are more self-selecting…they know what they’re getting when they come to me. – Tony Gentilcore

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

A brief intro and what’s new with Tony.

How he got started as a personal trainer – and living with THE Eric Cressey.

    * His first article at T-Nation, and the best advice he ever got about writing from TC Luoma.

    * Tony’s thoughts on how his training philosophy has evolved from when he started to today.

    * Along those same lines, how HIS training has changed over the years – and why.

    * Why he decided to go out on his own, and his initial thoughts and feelings during that time.

    * The Core Collective: What it is, and why these types of models could be the future of the fitness industry.

Last but not least the random/lightning round where we discuss his aversion to flying, hip-hop music, Star Wars and other random stuff!

Lee Taft on Plyo Steps, Lateral Running, and the Power of the Heels

Lee Taft on Plyo Steps, Lateral Running, and the Power of the Heels

In my humble opinion, Lee Taft might be the true GOAT of multi-directional speed.

While Lee primarily works as a consultant these days, over his storied career he’s owned his own facility numerous times, coached at virtually every level of sport, and perhaps more importantly has coached just about every type of athlete under the sun – all which gives him a truly unique approach and understanding of speed development.

In this episode, we take a deep dive into numerous areas of speed development – including deceleration and braking, why the heels are so critical, why “sport-specific” training is largely a myth, and much, much more.

    Let’s do this!

I never want to neglect the posterior chain, but we gotta catch the quads up! – Lee Taft

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    * A little background on Lee, and what’s new since the last time we chatted.

    * How a coach yelling at his basketball team helped him discover the “plyo step.”

    * POP: What it means, and how it will improve your lateral running.

    * Lee’s keys to deceleration, slowing down, and building the brakes.

    * The EXACT progression he takes athletes through to build braking skills.

    * How he teaches athletes to find their ideal athletic stance (and a little kinesthetic cue that will work wonders!)

    * What it means to “create” or “escape” space

    * How you can program and coach for multiple athletes across different sports.

    * One thing that Lee really has to take into account in his programming these days that he didn’t in the past.

    * His thoughts on the return to play (RTP) process, and how to integrate speed and power work back into their programs.

Spring Break 2024: Q1 Review and Q2 Goals for RTS and IFAST

One thing I’ve really focused on over the past couple of years is what some might describe as “radical transparency.”

While many people on social media are out there creating a highlight reel on the front-end but suffering miserably on the back-end, my goal is to give you real insights into both my personal and professional life, so you can see what it’s really like to have a family, run your own business, and attempt to do all the things.

So in today’s episode, we’re going to reflect on my previous episode titled 2024 Dreams, Goals and Aspirations, to see if I’m really on track to get what I want to done this year.

    Interested?

    Great – let’s do this!

    * Final thoughts on Q1, and what I need to accomplish to really move the need in Q2.

Have YOU Heard About the New IFAST University?

When Bill and I created IFASTU back in 2016, our singular goal was to make it an elite resource for trainers, coaches and rehab professionals across the globe.

So the new IFAST University is not only sleeker and more streamlined, but we also have two membership options based on where you’re at in your career.

Our IFASTU Standard option is like the Netflix of training con ed. Here you’ll have access to the complete IFASTU archive, which has well over 100 in-depth videos on topics like program design, coaching and anatomy and movement.

Matt Aldred on Drop Landings, Wearable Resistance, and Being Dangerous at Everything

If you train basketball players and want to take their health and performance to the next level, you’re going to love this episode!

Matt Aldred is in his sixth season at Furman and was promoted to assistant head coach and director of basketball health and performance in August of 2023.

Beyond basketball, Matt also handles the strength and conditioning programs for men’s golf, and men’s and women’s cross country.

But let’s be honest – this show is all about hoops!

Today we’re going to cover why Matt’s focused on individualizing programs and the buckets he uses to group his basketball players, how to manage and improve the performance of facially driven athletes, and in one of my favorite segments we discuss the role and implementation of drop landings into his programs.

These guys have high aspirations. They are compelled. They’re not committed or compliant – they’re compelled. So it’s our jobs to be like “Let’s rock! You want to train 6-days per week? Let’s go!” – Matt Aldred

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    * Matt’s background, and what got a soccer (Football!) player started in the world of physical prep.

    * His career arc, and how he got started working at Furman.

    * Why individualization is such a key piece of the puzzle for him.

    * The buckets he uses to define his basketball players, and how that helps him write more effective programs.

    * What “fascial” based-athletes are, and what they need to find that blend between performance and health.

    * Drop Landings: What they are, and why you should consider using them in your programs.

    * The KPI’s Matt is tracking with his drop landings.

    * Get started today! The sets, reps and box heights he would prescribe to someone new with drop landings.

    * Wearable resistance: What it is, and why Matt’s liking it.

    * The role of novelty in training of high-level athletes.

    * The BIG Question.
