Excellent summary of content marketing news

This is a great podcast. Definitely worth listening to every week at the gym, in the car, wherever. Joe and Robert give you a fun and interesting summary of some of the latest news in the world of content marketing, and wonderful examples of who is doing it well and who isn't. If you work in marketing this is absolutely worth your time every week.


I’ve listened to all 52 episodes, and I’m disappointed by the trajectory of this show. The podcast has the potential to build a supportive community of content marketers. However, as the show has progressed and as Robert’s and Joe’s popularity has increased, the tone of the show has become increasingly disparaging.

Robert and Joe position themselves as the feudal kings of the Content Marketing Kingdom. As they sit upon their thrones, they look down upon the serfs with judgment, and their way of maintaining their position in the Kingdom is by putting down other content marketers. Nowadays, the majority of the show is spent putting down other people – not building them up.

Yes, I understand the need to correct errors and have an open, honest dialogue, but when you choose articles with the sole purpose of putting the authors down, the show becomes tiresome. If I wanted that, I’d listen to Rush Limbaugh.

The funny thing is that Joe and Robert are extremely judgmental of journalists and the publishing world, but their journalistic ethics are dubious at best. Joe, episode 52 was a disgrace. Please do not disclose unpublished, private e-mails on air without the sender’s consent. That’s Journalism 101.

If I’m going to stomach 52 more episodes,the tone of the show has to change. The Kings of Content Marketing need to come off their thrones, hang up their crowns, and check their arrogance and egos at the door.

Weekly marketing “go-to” podcast

It's been said that the best marketing, doesn't feel like like marketing. Likewise, the best thought leadership doesn't feel like thought leadership. And this is certainly the case with This Old Marketing. Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose deliver what is arguably the best and most definitive podcast on Content Marketing, and they do it in an entertaining, interesting, intelligent and most importantly, humble way.

The intros have evolved into an impressive weaving of the topical and the cultural wherein Rose starts us on journey— a content experience — before launching into the week’s news with Pulizzi. After the news, we get our favorite part of the show: Rants and Raves. The raves are well deserved and the rants, are handled respectfully.

One of my favorite parts of the show is its namesake, This Old Marketing, wherein Joe and Robert take turns introducing us to Content Marketing examples of yore. Sometimes these are user-contributed, sometimes they’re dug up by Pulizzi and Rose themselves, but they’re always fascinating, interesting and educational. Favorites include Poor Richard’s Almanack, NFL Films and Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, but honestly, they’re all worthy.

If I had to pick just one marketing podcast, This Old Marketing with PnR would be it. Just don’t forget your favorite beverage. When you hear “Native Advertising”…you'll know what to do.
