Would you believe a gang leader if he told you he knew how to get people to stop shooting each other? Would you trust him or dismiss his ideas? What if I told you that gang leaders and police chiefs want the same things? Would you believe them? Is it possible that most of the stories about violence that we hear about violence and about police community relationships get it wrong? Hi, I’m the Rev. Jeffrey Brown. I had the privilege to be one of the architects of what is called "The Boston Miracle” - a 29 month period of 0 juvenile homicides in the city of Boston. It was a time when young people in gangs stopped shooting each other as the community and law enforcement began building relationships and working together. I have since taken this approach to 21 other communities around the country with similar results. In my travels, I’ve met some amazing and interesting people and heard many amazing stories - stories of unlikely partnerships, stories of hope, stories of heartbreak and progress. I’ll bring you with me as I continue to travel around the country working with communities to reduce violence. I’ll take you inside the world of police community relationships in my first podcast - Beyond Black and Blue. In other episodes, I’ll explore the history and implications of the Black Lives Matter movement. I’ll bring you into the world of gangs to help you understand how they work and why they make the decisions that they do. I’ll give you an inside view of what really happened in many of the cities you’ve heard about on the news - such as St. Paul, Ferguson, Dallas and Baltimore. I’ll bring in voices that you won’t normally hear - former gang members, police leadership, local street workers, clergy and politicians. We’ll listen together to the stakeholders on the front-lines. Please join me on this journey in The Courage to Listen.
