    Harder Core Urban Legends

    Harder Core Urban Legends

In a public release of this bonus episode originally released on Patreon in November 2019, Jaye talks more urban legends by discussing a couple of processed food-related legends. Is McDonalds adding animal byproducts and other gross fillers to their hamburgers? Are popular meat substitutes such as Beyond Burger and the Impossible Burger "indistinguishable" from dog food? Jaye also provides a bit of historical context for Americans' distrust of corporations involved in food processing, which often drives food-related urban legends.

Informative, thoughtful, academic without ever sounding pretentious

This is my kind of listen—really informative, thoughtful, academic without ever sounding pretentious, and raising my thinking to a new level about topics I don’t know much about. The episode with an incisive discussion of 1960s Detroit and the lead up to the riots of 1967 was especially fascinating and very helpful in getting my mind around the history involved. Her “did you know” sections are a great overview of related-but-tangential topics and are really helpful in understanding more complicated aspects of America’s history. I’ll definitely be adding this podcast to my regular rotation and anticipate the pod being really helpful for my college students as well—I’ll very likely be adding certain episodes to my teaching syllabi next semester.
