While this may appeal to some parents, the given advice will have little chance of raising children in a respectful and calm family, while frustrating parents.
For example, in the "Punishments and Rewards" episode Kevin Geary advises not using "time out" for toddlers. He goes on to advise not using spanking, taking things away, and food to coerce children to comply.
While I agree there may never be a reason to spank or take away food, "time out" is a useful tool to teach discipline. Kevin doesn't recommend what tools to actually use, which leads to what I observe in shopping malls of parents attempting to explain and negotiate to toddlers and young children, then begging for compliance, then raising their voice (threatening), then offering a reward treat for compliance. I observe out-of-control kids and frazzled parents.
I never spanked my children. My children did receive "time out" and did lose access to items when they were not behaving. My children do comply on the times I say things must be done. In my house, yes means yes. In Kevin's house, apparently more explaining and negotiating will somehow teach discipline, though I don't think it is going to work on young children.
Though Kevin Geary's advice is going to lead to unhappy families, I did not give his podcast the lowest rating because there are probably some parents who like Kevin's psycho-babble of which he has not shown it being effective.
Keeping me sane!
My go to corner when I need help polishing my parenting skills. A wonderful blog and great to have these podcasts easily accessible now.
I'm glad this podcast is back. Makes me aware of my flaws and provided great advice.
