This sample lecture introduces the Dead Sea Scrolls and the modern controversies surrounding them. It then goes on to explore the book of Enoch, which sheds bright light on the varieties of ancient Judaism and the world from which Christianity emerged. This course surveys the major books, genres, institutions, and ideas of the Hebrew Bible (commonly called the Old Testament), the goal of the course being to understand what the text says.
