Tackling Political Amnesia Ahead of the November Election

FEATURING TARA MCGOWAN - A new poll has found that about half of all independent voters and 15% of Republican voters want Donald Trump to suspend his campaign following his felony convictions on 34 counts. Ahead of the verdict, the New York Times studied a focus group of undecided independent voters and found that most were leaning toward Trump.
There appears to be a political amnesia about the years 2016 to 2020 and the breakneck speed with which scandals, attacks, ethical violations, and outright lies streamed out of the White House on a daily basis and how a violent mob almost succeeded in a coup on January 6, 2021.
What role has our media played in enabling Trump? How is the information divide undermining the U.S.? And what needs to happen between now and the election to shore up democracy?

FEATURING COREY BRETTSCHNEIDER - Former President and soon-to-be Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump was convicted last week on 34 felony charges in a hush-money incident that took place ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Newspaper headlines screamed “TRUMP GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS” and media reports relied on superlatives such as “historic” and “unprecedented” to label the unanimous jury verdict. Given that Trump has been unusually adept at avoiding accountability for a staggering number of alleged crimes, the verdict caused shockwaves.

FEATURING INGRID CRUZ - The issue of immigration tends to reach a fever pitch during election years. But organizers work continuously between election cycles for immigrant rights. In a new op-ed for YES! Magazine Ingrid Cruz makes an honest assessment of the movement and the internal challenges it faces, especially given the increasing racial, ethnic, and national diversity within its ranks.

FEATURING EMILY PETERSON-CASSIN - The Department of Justice has launched a lawsuit against Live Nation and its ownership of Ticketmaster. According to AP, “Ticketmaster is the world’s largest ticket seller, processing 500 million tickets each year in more than 30 countries. Around 70% of tickets for major concert venues in the U.S. are sold through Ticketmaster.” The lawsuit is seeking to challenge Ticketmaster’s monopoly power over artist performances, venues, and concert goers. Will it work?

Israel Attacks Rafah, Massacring Dozens
Listen to story:

FEATURING ZAHRA BILLOO - An Israeli strike on a refugee camp in Rafah has killed at least 45 people and injured more than 200. Palestinians displaced by many months of genocidal assault had fled to the area in Rafah, designated by Israel as safe, before being bombarded with Israeli bombs. Eyewitness accounts say there was fire everywhere and that people, mostly women and children, were burned alive.
Meanwhile, rather than focus on U.S. backing of Israel’s genocide, American elected officials have been continuing to hold hearings on antisemitism and campus protests for Gaza, grilling university officials for allowing pro-Palestinian student activism.

The summer 2024 issue of YES! Magazine has been hitting newsstands and landing in mail boxes around the country. And, as we do every quarter, we’ll preview this latest issue of the solutions journalism magazine where I work as Senior Editor. The issue is themed around “Access,” and in her Editor’s Letter, YES! Executive Editor Evette Dionne asks the question, “what if we lived in a world where access—to medical treatment, to the workplace, to basic enjoyment— was not treated as an afterthought, but was embedded in every element of our society instead?”

Healthy Day
I cross reference my independent news podcasts, and get a lot of good information from Rising Up. “OK BOOMERS”
I am a 71 year-old (3rd born in family after my dad came home from WWII) boomer who thinks like millennials / progressives! We ALL need Medicare for All, Green New Deal, tuition-free higher education, living wage, prison reform, injustice system overhaul, police demilitarized and defunded, end military-industrial complex etc ..... we need Democratic Socialism, like the Scandinavian countries. The USA is archaic, backward and cruel toward its people and people of the world. We are the greatest purveyors of violence in the world.
I do not like or support tRump.
