Description

Between 1942 and 1945, the US government locked up tens of thousands of Japanese American citizens not because of anything they’d done but because of who they were. Scapegoat Cities is a podcast that helps you know and feel what this episode of mass injustice was. Each episode tells one true and moving human story drawn from historian Eric Muller’s two decades of research, reminding us of the devastating harm that can arise when a frightened nation turns against its own people.

Author, Dear Miss Breed & Stanley Hayami, Nisei Son

In this first podcast, Eric Muller, gives listeners a brief but clear backstory of the Japanese American incarceration— an introduction for those who know little about the early days of WWII when the lives of the Nikkei were turned upside down on the basis of long standing racism and wartime hysteria. I'm eager to hear next episodes. I'm sure students will like getting the kind of personal accounts that are to make this a new way of learning about the incarceration....through the words of the people who lived it.

lawyer and teacher

Professor Muller sets out to do something extraordinary here: Provide insight into the shameful "Japanese Internment" prison camps by telling some individual stories of the Americans who were imprisoned. The first episode gives brief historical background, and some insight into the racism that created thesecamps. I look forward to hearing the rest of the series!!

writer/director, CONSCIENCE AND THE CONSTITUTION

Eric's done the research and tells his stories with style.
