Nice Perspective on Current News

This podcast offers a nice perspective on current news stories. It provides additional information that the popular press often leaves out and clarification of the facts presented. These guys have actually read the scientific papers and are able to compare and contrast the science with other discoveries in the field and put it in the context of the real world.

Review on Human Evolution Speeding Up

as compared to Answers 30 Jan 2008 article by Dr. Georgia Purdom regarding the Proceedings of National Academy Sciences’ article “Recent Acceleration of Human Adaptive Evolution.” Dr. Rana is to be commended for a rapid response to the article. He begins his Podcast clearly and with good opening commentary for what the authors were looking at and the general methodology they employed to ascertain information of the rate of human evolution. He explains that the authors are mixing micro- and macro-evolution definitions as being just “evolution,” and that they should have distinguished that the genetic basis for lactose intolerance was in fact a type of micro-evolution, which does not offer evidence that humans evolved from other species, including chimpanzees. Fuz agrees with the authors that it is possible for micro-evolution to be hastened when human population expands or separate groups live in varying environments, but he goes on to say that this should be arrested as humanity worldwide adopts similar living habits. Dr. Purdom uses the term “adaptation” in lieu of micro-evolution, probably simply to avoid crediting the term evolution as being meaningful. A good short description of SNPs is given but it may be that the author has confused the point of how they are supposed to indicate rapid evolution as she mentions that those genes showing rapid evolution are identical among the different people groups studied. Dr. Purdom goes on to attack the authors through many supposed alternative ways God might have allowed for the observed phenomenon—this is a common way for some Christians to criticize scientists that is not very useful in discipling them, or impressing the readers.

This show sounds scientific, but it's more creationist nonsense

This show is simply not science. This is clearly a Christian apologetics show. I feel that this show is actually dangerous in a sense, this show SOUNDS scientific, and to a layperson, it might sound genuine. Remember the old adage: A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing! This show needs to be removed from the sciences and placed in the religion section! Much of the science and understanding of evolution is highly technical, and takes years of serious study to actually understand. To the layperson much of the science is pretty intimidating and daunting. And not having a full grasp of the information can be confusing. Subjects dealing with evolution, such as anthropology, genetics, biology, and paleontology, are not easy, and can easily require a lifetime of study! I have a feeling that the hosts are either: scientifically inept, OR extremely disingenuous. Either way they are extremely misleading! I will give a good example, The show purports to check the most up to date scientific literature and give it a fair perspective. In a recent episode (but this idea is repeated in any episode involving Neanderthals) the host reads an article that the newest scientific data shows that humans could not be the descendents of neanderthals, and thus, what many biologists and anthropologists believe is proving to be wrong, and science is showing that a literal interpretation if the bible is right. Sounds O.K. so far, except that I learned this over 10 years ago, when the very first genetic studies became available, and Anthropologists have questioned whether humans are the descendents of neanderthals for decades. This does not mean that the whole science of human evolution is crumbling. Far from it. New discoveries are coming in every day that are, in reality, proving evolution. Studies in genetics and paleontology are really making great strides, and with each new discovery, there comes new questions. That does not mean that the sciences are falling apart! Listeners beware, the people making this show definitely have an agenda. Their goal is to attempt to show, scientifically, that the book of Genesis is factual history, and that we are the descendants of the 8 human survivors of Noah's flood. (Genetics has very clearly disproven this idea.) I think this show is an attempt to prostelitize while sounding scientific, and to misinform Christians that; science confirms what's written in the Bible, unfortunately, the Bible is simply NOT a scientific text. Because there is no scientific evidence supporting any kind of "creation model" they attack science! The bible is full of scientific errors: the King James Bible clearly states unicorns are real! (KJV Numbers 24:8, Psalms 29:6, I'm not joking, look it up!) Now, because the bible says unicorns are real, we must believe in them, and despite all the evidence against the existance of unicorns, we must change the public school system and teach children that unicorns are (or were) real creatures. Basically, that is the type of "scientific" thinking behind this incredibly unscientific podcast.
