In 1992, hundreds of armed federal agents surrounded a family of white separatists in a ramshackle mountaintop cabin. Eleven days later, three people were dead—and the story of Ruby Ridge was just beginning. Journalist Ruth Graham explores a tragedy that’s become a foundational myth for the modern right, and finds some frightening lessons about power and paranoia. Standoff: What Happened at Ruby Ridge? is the first in a new line of in-depth narrative podcast miniseries from Slate.

Customer Reviews

In a political climate where paranoia, conspiracy theories and white supremacy seem to be creeping into legitimate public discourse, this podcast couldn’t be more timely! Fascinating look at a moment in history I hadn’t heard of.

Another Great Slate Show

Just listened to the first episode, courtesy of “Slow Burn”. Great episode and a promising series head!

Good listen...

Just listened to the first episode Via the Slow Burn podcast. I kind of remember it but was only 7 when it happened. I grew up an hour away in Montana, and my mother is from Bonner’s Ferry. I’m looking forward to the future episodes and getting a hold of my family members who remember when it happened and what they can recall about the event.
