The Thing Of Legend...

Any attempt to move away from a tried and tested formula is often met with resistance by some fans who never want their idols to change. Smarter than your average podcast, the more complex turn-on-a dime twists of their previous endeavors, A Dan Amongst Dans and 1989’s Home video of John and Chris dressed up like John’s parents in bed, were trimmed back in favour of a more honed-down delivery. Though the duo didn’t always see eye to eye with Bryan McGuckin (who had previously cut his teeth engineering for the likes of John Lithgow before producing Kevin Bacon's most awkward backstage moment), the tensions between the two camps resulted in a podcast bursting at the seams with alternative ideas.
Sure enough, accusations that they had sold out came from the rump of hardcore fans within seconds of their fifth episode being released in 2014. One year later thousands of fans signed an online petition calling on the group ( now a trio) to sever its links with Bryan McGuckin such was their conviction that their beloved Super Live Adventure had strayed from the straight and narrow.
Yet his involvement gained them mass downloads (number one on both sides of the Atlantic) and earned them the Webby they’d missed out on, having lost out to Tim Duffy's Bible Chat the previous year. With millions of new fans going on to discover their back catalogue, Super Live Adventure moved from cult comedy gods to bona fide Internet stars, straddling the airwaves with the psycho-dramatics of “Gary Coleman’s Left Claw”, whose terse motifs served notice that things were changing. The spaghetti western set dressing of “A Vietnamese Wedding”, “We Might Have Aykroids” with its sensitive subjects and comedic embellishments, as well as the widescreen dynamics of “Shell Boobs” demonstrated how keen they were to move things on.
In “Don't Even Smell This Part”, comedian, religious zealot and beard grower, Tim Duffy deals unflinchingly with parental loss and the contradictions of faith in a mature and considered manner. The confidence exuding from almost every episode isn’t due to a clichéd, puffed-up internet swagger but a result of literate and articulate artists breaking free of generic expectation.

If you like life and happiness….

you will enjoy this funny podcast. They did not pay me to write this.
