As a college admissions counselor, I think “The Crush” sums up the way most people feel about the college admissions process and the college experience itself. High school students fall into a deep infatuation with a potential future alma mater, maybe even many, and work themselves into ulcerous, sleepless fits trying to find a way to get noticed and give them a chance. And then there’s the other kind of crush. The physical weight of it all. The pressure of expectations for yourself, your parents, your peers, the weight of the finances you might be asked to conjure up in order to appease your hungry crush, and the crush of information in the form of mailings to your house, stories in the media, tweets, op-eds, rumors, gossip, and outright bull. This podcast looks to explore these issues and more by talking to fascinating people who know more about it all than I do.

Always thoughtful, and entertaining, too
Davin is a gifted interviewer and careful listener — passionate, well-informed, and curious, with a terrific sense of humor and a light touch, even when handling difficult material. And he finds equally passionate and always-interesting guests, too. If you have any interest in the college admissions process/landscape, it’s well worth going back to the beginning (2015) and listening to every episode.

I love the interesting perspectives gathered from all corners of college this podcast offers: admission, application, issues around access, the purpose and goals of a college education—basically voices from lots of involved parties, thinking about their position, impact, blindspots and imagining a better way forward.

I’m an IB coordinator and Social Studies Teacher who was drawn to this podcast after a recent interview with the Director General of IB, Dr. Siva Kumari, was shared with me by a colleague. Since then I have listened to almost every episode of this show, and have shared several of the podcasts with parent groups, students, and fellow educators. These are relevant, amusing and important discussions with experts who understand the current pressures affecting our kids. Thank you Davin for this terrific podcast and keep up the great work! An absolute must listen for teachers, parents and students caught up in "the crush" of all things college related!
