If you love commercials...

Sometimes interesting but surprisingly uninformative program that seems heavier on ads than substance. Other reviews point out the heavy plugging. The first 4-10 minutes of EVERY program is commercials of some sort, then sprinkled throughout what's left. There are a dozen better podcasts without the buzz marketing.

Wonderful Industry-Insider Podcast :)

Wes' "Deeply Graphic DesignCast" is an awesome little tidbit of industry insider goodies! It's refreshing to hear about tips, trends and general working methodology direct from fellow creatives, who explore issues from all angles, including client, business and creative. Definitely check it out. From an LA-based graphic designer and now-happy subscriber! :) J

Three average designers talking shop

I'm revising my review. Full disclosure, I've left my original review below so you can see where I've come from.
I didn't like this podcast initially but I wanted to keep listening because I love design. I originally gave this podcast only two stars but over the last three episodes I have really heard a turn for the better in every respect and so I'm 'Ret-conning' my review to add two more stars.

This show has really found it's legs. The conversations are more dynamic. The show went from being three self-congratulatory, timid designers in the beginning to three much more sure and powerful voices speaking to the problems, frustrations and excitements of their industry. Instead of skimming over the top of subjects as part of a rushed, 25 minute conversation, they have broadened the format to well over an hour giving sufficient breadth and thought to the topics. They have included a guest on one episode (Something I hope to hear much more of) and talked a lot more specifically about what makes good design good. The show is starting to feel more solid too with a new intro and announcer as well as a more established structure to the segments.

I give it four stars. This show still has room to grow but if they continue to raise their game the way they have recently, the show can't help but be a five start podcast in the near future.

"I really don't want to be harsh and stating that is not a good way to start a review where my main intent is to encourage the makers of the podcast-but that is my position.
To restart, this is not a bad podcast it's just not good, yet.

Here's the thing, these are three deeply average designers with a very standard corporate view of design. Safe, boring, humble to the point of being obsequious and, well, safe. They are also not used to speaking on mics but that's a skill that can be learned. The fact that they are all new at podcasting shouldn't be held against them. They will get better at it. By episode six, they ARE better at speaking and keeping the entertainment value high enough to be tolerable. What I do have to hold against them is the utter averageness of their philosophy. The total banality of their advice and the over-all lack of conviction they bring to discussions of design is hard to listen to. Design is not for the timid. Not good design. Good designers can talk with steely rigor about their ideas without qualification. The basic problem with this podcast is that you won't learn anything from these three.

I do want them to have a successful podcast. Because I love design. I love listening to designers talk about why they do it and what's great about it. I like to hear someone with a fire in their belly to change the world through the elegance of their concepts impress upon an audience why they think they have done something new, or talk about where someone else has. Talking about why design is good is the real meat that this podcast is missing. Right now it feels like a support group for scared middle managers who want to know where the storm cellar is in case of a drizzle.

I have a few small suggestions which may really improve the show and perhaps help it last.

1) Talk about design. Your tips and tricks are fine but they only serve to help other scared middle manager types keep their jobs for a little longer. Take stands on why something is good, debate it and change your minds when something even better comes along.

2) Get guests. The three podcasters sound like a circle j**k. Get a few superstars to come on the show and talk about truly new ideas and why they work. Have a different guest each show and find time for segments on particular examples of good design.

3) Longer show. Yes I know I just shredded the show but I want more of it. The host grazes topics without any depth, shuffling his two co-hosts rapidly past anything interesting. Get deeper and stay longer. Trust that your audience is into your topic enough to stick around.

That's it. I don't like the show - yet, but I will stick around and root for it to get better; because I like design."
