Smart, in-depth film discussion and snappy film banter

The George Sanders Show is one of the best, smartest new film podcasts around, and it's quickly become one of the first podcasts, among many, I listen to on my Friday subscription list.

Each week, Sean and Mike choose two loosely related films ("gangster films," "horse-racing films," "comedy classics," etc.), from among new and old films, and spend the two biggest portions of the show discussing each, drawing on their love for film and knowledge of film in both insightful and delightful ways.

They also choose a "cinema-essential" each week, a recommendation tying in with the week's theme (eg. an " essential slapstick" movie related to the comedy classics theme) - I now have a growing list of these recommendations! - and they also discuss a bit of film news from the week (eg. Miyazaki's retirement).

The show is very well-structured, moving along segment by segment professionally, but it has a nice informal feel, too, so that it doesn't seem so tied to its structure so as to feel restricted by it. (The two hosts, happily, were not above a spontaneous diatribe against Mr. Weinstein, for example, on the Grandmaster episode.)

On a last note, I love the rapport and informal ease between Sean and Mike - the two are clearly good friends and discussion between them is flows along snappily, and they can agree and disagree with one another with an equal degree of comfort.

Bottom line: Super stuff. Check it out!

I've only listened to 2 episodes, but that was enough to tell me that these guys know their stuff. Really insightful conversations.
