an extraodinary podcast for extraodinary listeners

I'd like to preface this by saying The Long View isn't for everyone, if you're looking for the next new shiny, latest news, or 5 min synopises look elsewhere. But, if you want to take an indepth look at a game you love, or on the fence about spending your hard earned money on what is becoming an increasingly expensive hobby, go no further. Your gracious host, and special guest, will dig in and leave no stone unturned. They have extensively played each and every game they review, and give thoughful unbiased opinions. And, just proving how comittted to thoroughness this cast is, the end of the year "best of" this is always a year behind, letting each game ruminate, so only the true gems are discovered. Start with a game you know, sit back, and enjoy.

Take a step back...

Focusing on games that have stood the test time (and some newer ones too), Geof Gambil and a cavalcade of guest hosts dive deep into what makes great games great. I enjoy learning about older titles that may have missed my radar, but also games that I’ve heard about for years and just need that final push to get me to try it out.

Geoff belongs right up there with the biggest personalities in board gaming - I find myself skipping through some other well known podcasts to get to the serious content … not The Long View! It is packed full from start to finish. Some of my favorite games have become my favorites simply by listening to Geof and guests (Joel Eddy, Martin G, Stefan Feld, Tom Vasel among many others!) discuss a game’s components, rules, player count, strategies, criticisms, etc. for an hour or more. This thorough treatment of a single topic is a great way to get a feel for a game and whether I might enjoy it myself - rather than wading through bgg one-liners or 8-minute youtubes.

The website’s archive has an alphabetical list of games reviewed on the podcast, just some of my favorites have been: A Few Acres of Snow, Airlines Europe, Biblios, 1775: Rebellion, Bonanza, Churchill, Cosmic Encounter, Dominant Species, Coup, Glory to Rome, Imperial, Innovation, Kingdom Builder, Labyrinth, Pax Porfirinana, Power Grid, Struggle of Empires, Thebes, Through the Ages, Tigris and Euphrates, Troyes and War of the Ring … just to name a few! :) Wow, that’s a least a month’s worth of commuting for all you on-the-fencers out there.

Highly recommended.
