Lit as Flamin' Hot Cheetos

"The Poetry Gods" is the type of podcast that, when you find it, it feels like coming home after a long time of being lost in these streets. By that I mean that Aziza Barnes, José Olivarez, and Jon Sands are hosts in the truest sense of the term. They are open, kind, and thoughtful as a semi-circle of arms greeting the end of a long day. For anyone interested in writing, poetry, art, or the potential dopeness of humanity, this is a must listen. Their guests are some of the best poets in the game, from OG legends to your newest favorite poet, not to mention the hosts themselves who are lit as Flamin' Hot Cheetos. The Poetry Gods have created an archive of the biographies, motivations, and inspirations of some of the most important thinkers and writers we have. The ones who give us permission to imagine a new story and all its possibilities. James Baldwin once said, "The poets, by which I mean all artists, are finally the only people who know the truth about us." The Poetry Gods know many truths, and they're not shy about letting us in on them.

Podcast to make you a better poet and human.

I subscribe to a lot of podcasts but never actually opt to listen to them instead of music when I am moving through the world. Because of this podcast that is no longer true.

The Poetry Gods discuss craft, motivation, publishing, performance, and stages of artistic evolution with intellect that is so welcoming it practically invites you in for homemade hummus and whiskey. The poetry giants they have as guests are all disarming with their honesty and insight. The intimacy of these conversations give such great access to moments of the creative process that you will not find anywhere else.

I will literally mourn the day when I catch up to the current episode and have to wait a full week for another hour of these dope conversations.

truly a gift

I cannot sing enough praises about this show. Funny, insightful, and incredibly healing as an artist and a poet of color. The hosts are kind souls who give generous interviews that never feel like formal affairs. The guests are dynamic artists who let us in on their process and trajectory in a way that is very informing of their work and unique to the individual. Plus, the show is hilarious when it wants to be and the hot takes from the hosts are unparalleled. I feel like I know y'all now, so thanks for letting me into your home (studio). Listen to this!!! It's a gift!
